It has become a running battle
wh n finally the Mayflower drops
anchor in December of 1680 not
apposite Hudson's river, its orlri
nal destination, but 400 sea miles
northeast in the harbor enclosed
by the hook of land at the tip of
Capt Cod. Now fo on with the
story
CHAPTER t

World as a day of rest; time was
too precious, God would understand.
John Alden and a dozen helpers
were sent ashore to begin assem
bling the shallop, a small sail boat
which had been brought on the
Mayflower, disassembled. The parts
for the shallop had been unloaded
the afternoon before and towed to
the beach, while Miles Standish and
some of the other men made their
first exploration along the shore by
foot .
Prom this first venture into the
New World Standish and his men
returned with a worrisome report.
They had found on Cape Cod only
sand and stunted trees, no fertile
soil, no sign of human life. Ob
viously the settlers could not colon
ize here. Captain Jones agreed. He
Instructed them to assemble the
nhaJlnn so that they could sail
around the Inner coast of the cape
In search of a good location.
In so Instructing them. Jones
lirrt afain this time by omission
He knew very well from the chart
by Captain smltn, wnicn my nia
den in his cabin, where the best
location lay: at Plymouth (as Smith
had named lt a mere hundred
miles west across the bay. But
part of the trickery by which he
had persuaded the settlers to stop
at Cape cod instead 01 continuing
south to their original destination
had been to pretend ignorance of
this coast. He dared not give his
hand away. The settlers mast find
Plymouth harbor for themselves.
And now the women also went
shore with two and three months'.

Grinning, he offered her his little
bundle a single dirty shirt.
For a moment the girl hesitated,
then smiling tossed the shirt upon

The second day in Cape Cod Bay
heron with sounds of the Captain
walking back and forth in the Great
Cabin, moaning loudly. He had a
bad tooth. The purser had tried to
pull R and failed, and In his ag
ony Jones had childishly thrown
him out.
Not twenty minutes later Mr.
jmih was disturbed bv an authori
tative knock on his cabin door. Sam
uel Fuller entered, advanced to his
table, and there, uninvnea, deposit
ed his surgeon's Instruments and a
small green ootue.
"What leave have you to walk
Into my quarters?"
"I come for to take out your
tooth." said Sam. "I'll do It without
paining you. Now take courage."
Mr. Jones had not eaten that
morning;, nor slept the night before,
and the brandy had gone quickly to
his head. "Courage!" he exclaimed.
Courage we are all cowards."
"So we all are," Sam consoled
him. patting his shoulder. Come.
I'll give you a potion to remove the
pain." Mr. Jones watched him anxi
ously as he measured drops from
the areen bottle Into the brandy,
nodding to Sam's counting. ". . .
seventeen .eighteen, nineteen, twen
ty, there!"
And that, Sam said to himself,
should lav a horse on its back. "This
potion." he said aloud, "is of that
called opium, which is got from
the poppv that grows in the East."
Mr. Jones swallowed and coughed
violently. "Now it is best to lay down
flat." Sam advised. Mr. Jones suf
fered himself to be helped onto the

Sam said a silent prayer for the
safetv of his fingers, and Inserted
his forceps. God forgive me. Sam
thouRht for tills which I do. It was
a horrible great swelling Mr. Jones
had. but if left to itself it should
have gone down in a week. But
drawn the toolh must be. for the
sake of Mr. Jones' soul and for the
sake of his relations with the set
tlers. Sam was convinced that Mr.
Jones would one day be thankful.
He gave the tooth a final loosening
twist and pulled it out cleanly.
"Now. sir." he said, "vou needs
rest vourself and try and sleep."
A little later he gave the patient a
drink of warmed brandy and water.
Willi a few drops of opium, and a
half an hour aller the extraction
Mr. Jones was asleep.
Belore Same left the cabin he
placed the toolh conspicuously on
the center of the table.
Outside, he shooed the women
awav. "Pear nothing, good wives,
the battle with the Devil is well
begun soon we may expect in his
place a shining angel with a black

Sam's hope for a reformed Cap
tain was not Immediately realized
During the next several days Jones
was more cantankerous than usual.
Some of the men. ashore on a sec

Looking up, he experienced
shock of pleasure: her face was
radiantly Dale, the eyes hcavy-lld
ded. the lower Ho trembling: her
black hair, unbound, hung down
straight, touching each cheek, leav
ing a white cave of light at her
throat and ripping out in sue a is
ordered ends over her breast.
She whtsuered something.
"Speak up. girl, I cannot hear
you." he said.
Bar roles became normal.
Love is for all. I love you as I love
my father. Christ loved all men, the
saved and the sinner."
He saw a sort of shining dew on
her forehead close by the line of her
hair, while she lifted his hand and
held It acalnst her breast. What
would she have of rum wny am
she come to him?
You are not spurned what do
you want of me? Men would kiss
me. Do you want that? Nothing
is denied you oh, believe me!"
Their eves were on a level: In
her stocking feet she was no longer
taller than he: and with shivering,
warm emotion he stood close against
her, looking into her face.
