A handsome young man named
Bruce, who calls himself a writer,
Is telling Nancibel about his back

CHAPTER S
"We lived In a nice council-house
on a building estate. Dad worked
lor the Metropolitan Water Board."
"My goodness gracious! You
weren't born In Llmehouse at all?"'
"No. All lies. I tell them because
TJmehouse Is easier to live down.
People think more of you If you've
risen from the gutter ... I want
to bo Somebody. I I don't want to
be mass produced; 1 want to be
nrisinal."
Nancibel nodded. She understood
the need to be somebody.
"It's true about my writing,
though,'- Bruce hastened to say.
"I've written a novel and It's to be
published. And when I've got the
money I shall do nothing but write.
Er at present I'm a secretary . . .
a chauffeur-secretary."
"What's It about? Your book?"
"I'll tell you about it, if I may,"
aald Bruce happily. "It's about this
kid. see- Born in a slum . . ."
"Oh. help!" cried Nancibel.
"You've got slums on the brain."
- Bruce continued. "He gets sent to
a terrible farm where he's treated
worse than ever. It's one of those
lonely farms where things go on
that nobody dares write about. But
I'm going to make people sit up
Well, then he grows up a bit more
and he meets this woman . . . She's
a good deal older than he Is. a
wealthy aristocratic woman, and
very beautiful of course, and she
takes him up. just for a whim, and
be becomes her lover."
"Where does he meet her?" asked
Kancibel.
"He's the Boots In a hotel where
she's staying. But she takes him
with her to her house in Mayfalr.
Of course she's terribly depraved.
And when he finds out what .she
really la he strangles her and gets
hung ... It doesn't appeal to you
at all. as a story?"
"N-no. Not much. I'm afraid I
don't like miserable books. I like
books about nice people. And a story
where It all comes out right in the
end." .
Bruce slRhed. "And It doesn't in
terest you?"
"No. Look, this Is my home. Good
night. Bruce."
He turned and strolled back to
town, facked bv a tumult of con
flicting emotions. He must see
Nancibel again. He was cast down
and uplifted. Down on the Marine
Parade the band was still playing
His spirits fell to zero. He remem

It Takes Two to Make a Bed
Miss Ellis heard footsteps along
the passage Sunday and hastily put
Mr. Paley's diary back where she
had found It. Nancibel came In.
"You wouldn't think," said Miss
Ellis, "that these Paleys had had a
child, would you? Well they did.
But It died."
Nancibel left off wrestling with
the mattress and stood at the side
of the bed looking at Miss Ellis. It
was the same in all the rooms. She
did the work while the housekeeper
talked.
"It vat' ouite tragedy." contin
ued Miss Ellis. "Her people were
wealthy and he was quite poor and
they didn't want her to marry him.
80 she made a runaway match. But
he couldn't forgive the scornful
things they'd said. He made her cut
herself off completely: wouldn't let
her write or anytning. weu. iney
had an awful time. Poor as rats.
"Well, they had this little girl
and she got ill. T.B. Ano they hadn't
the cash for a sanatorium and he
wouldn't let her write to her people.
And she said if the child died she'd
never forgive him. And the child
did die and she never has."
"In her shoes." aald Nancibel,
"I'd have have written all the same.
for themselves. Not that he doesn't
blame himself. He does. He knows
It's his fault that child Isn't alive
today. And he's got plenty of money
now too. He began to get on after
that, and got an art gallery or
something to build."
"Poor things," said Nancibel. "No
wonder they look so sad."
Voices In the garden below drew
Miss Ellis to the window. "Do, for
goodness' sake, come and look!" ex
1 claimed Miss Ellis. "What on earth
wl l those children be un to next?
Nancibel lolned her in time to
tee the little Coves undergoing the
first of seven testa Imposed by the
rules of the Noble Covenant of
Spartans. Thev were walking blind
fold along a stone parapet at the
end of the terrace, where tne rocaf
fell steenlv awav to the beach.
"It's that Hebe! She puts them up
to It," cried Miss Ellis. "If ever a
child needed her bottom smacked
the's one. But come along, come
along, Nancibel! Mrs. Slddal doesn't
pay you to stand gaping out of the
window. No wonder the beds take
aueh a long time!"
For the best Dart of th. vear the
services of the Pendizack church arei
pooriy attended. lor most of the cot
tagers HO to Charjel and th btlar
0(1 parishioners dislike the Anglo-i
Catholicism of Father Bolt. But In
me summer rumors of fantastic rit
ual bring a trickle of visitor from
Portherryn. Mass at SI. Body's is
attended by people from the Mar
ine Parade Hotel who do not gen
erally go to church at all.
Bruce went becaiu hu mi.tr.
had a fancy to see the place and
had -ordered him to escort her. Pres
ently Mrs. Lechene appeared at
tne top of the stairs. The cruell
light of the morning sun so emDha.
sized her age. her bulk and her
dowdiness that he felt considerably
reassured. None but the nastiest
mind, he thought, could suppose him
to be more than a secretary-chauf-
icur to so ripe an employer.
"Don't you have to wear a hat?"
ne asxea.
"I hoc not! D'vou think thev'll
throw me out of church? I haven't!
got a nat."
For Anna Lechene was very proud
of her hair which was true sold.
very thick, quite straight, and hung
to ner Knees, ene missed no occa
sion for letting It so hang. But
when obliged to put it up she
braided it in thick cables ' and
wound It round her head.
Bruce hoped to find Nancibel
among the flock at St. Body's and
pressed on toward that tall square
tower. What will ahe think about
me . and Anna? Nothini. whv
should she think anything? If I
meei. ner again, 1 snail tell ner:
That's Mrs. Lechene. My boss. She's
a very well known writer. No. You
wouldn't care for her oboks Yes,
I know she looks peculiar. So do
most lady writers. Yes. Mrs. Le
chene ... I believe she's divorced
him. I type her novels and drive:
her car. Secretary-chauffeur."
A full peal of bells rang out from
the tower. A long procession of
people was coming along a narrow
path. Strung out. in single file, it1
seemed endless. Gerry Siddal led It
and alter him came Duff, Robin,
Canon Wraxton. Evangeline Wrax-
ton. Mrs. Cove, Maud, Beatrix,
Michael, Luke. Hebe, Sir Henry
Liiiiora. Caroline, a consiaeraDie
gap. Mr. Paley, Mrs. Paley.
"Could it be a Butlins Camp?"
speculated ttruce.
"No." said Anna. "There's a little
hotel down there In the cove. I
hear it's most attractive and com
fortable. I was thinking of going
there when we leave the Marine Pa
rade. But I'm not sure I like the
looks of the inmates, if these are
tney.
Anna and Bruce took seats In a
pew Just behind the Wraxtona.
"Who on earth is that supposed
to be?" Anna asked, pointing to a
banner of St. Sody. used in pro
cessions. "It's rather good," she de-
lared. "A bit epicene I expect one
.' the artists in Porthmerryn design
ed it for them."
At this point she became aware
of the lnflamec countenance of
Canon Wraxton. who had turned
round and was glaring at her.
"Will you kindly make less noise7'
he barked.
Anna gasped at him. She dls
liked parsonse and was habitually
rude tcythem. But it was not often!
that they were rude to ner.
"I mean it. "thundered the Canon
"If vou can't behave decently I shall
nave you turned out. '
You're making a terrible noise
yourself." retorted Anna.
The Canon was now surveying
Bruce. "If you've any decency," he
said, "you'll go and Induce your
motner to go witn you."
Nothing could have silenced Anna
I tore effectively. And the appear-
nce 01 Gerry in tne cnancei, carry
ing a taper, created a diversion.
Candle after candle was lit. The1
Canon looking like a bull In a field,
turned to survey tnis iresn enorm
ity. Anna giggled but did not ven-l
ture to speak again. The congrega
tion had left off staring before the
cross preceding the choir appeared,
and Father Bott, surrounded yb
servers and acolytes, emerged from
the vestry.
