day's total of 3,330.000 shares.
Right at the beginning of the session

losses.
That didn't last Terr long. Chrysler

mer Mayor William O'Dwyer,
making a dramatic plane flight
back to the city, says he is avail
able to testify in the Brooklyn
grand jury investigation of gam
bling graft payments to police
during his administration.
But he has not received any
request to be a witness, he says.
O'Dwyer, who soon is to take
up his duties as ambassador to
Mexico, arrived here by plane
from Washington yesterday aft
er a vacation in California.
O'Dwyer told a special news
conference that he is sorry he
ever had called the Brooklyn
gambling and graft investiga
tion a "witch-hunt." He said he
now thinks the grand jury is do
ing a "magnificent job."
The ex-mayor declared he has
'nothing but the highest com

District Attorney Miles F. Mc

Veteran Star of Silent Film
Is Forgotten Man Without Job
By DAVID MURRAY
(Uattad Praia Btaft Correspondent)
Paris, Oct 10 (U.R) Erich Von Stroheim, veteran star of the
old silent screen dramas, said
nationality law Is turning his
He said the strictly-celluloid
movie. "Sunset Boulevard" In which he plays a forgotten director
buttering to a has-been star, has
carried over into his personal
affairs.
In real life, the 65-year-old
Von Stroheim said, he is a for
gotten man without a job on the
verge of becoming a man with
out a country.
If he stays in France he will
lose his U.S. citizenship. If he
returns to the U.S. he says he
will starve.
'I can't find a job even after
making 'Sunset Boulevard,' " he
said in an interview.
"The law discriminates
against naturalized Americans
and lt Is both unjust and chau
vinistic." .

The law to which he referred
is the nationality act of 1940
which requires naturalized
Americans Von Stroheim is
Austrian-born to forfeit thelr
citizenshlp if they live more than
five years continuously outside
the United States.
"The joker in the law," Von
Stroheim said, "is that they
claim I have spent most of my
life in France for the past five
years and that constitutes resi

"That is true, but I have al

that because I have been work.

anything but completely unfair.
"I can't afford to live in the
United States. I've paid my
taxes there and I have no dol

back to the States without a job
I'll starve.1
He said he had not lived in
France for five years continu
ously, but had been in and out
