    Morse on Radio
'Quiz Program
Portland, May 18 P) Senator
Wayne L. Morse (R., Ore.), was
the answer man last night on a
radio quiz program with voters
He hopes will renominate him
In the Oregon primary election
tomorrow.
While questions came by tele
phone from many points in Ore
gon, the republican senator an
swered them at the rate of al
most one a minute and a halt
by radio.
For an hour, Morse fired the
answers on where he stands on
national and local Issues. The
announcer said 200 remained on
file when the hour ended.
On the Brarman farm plan,
Morse said "opposed it would
make the farmers the employes
of the government."
On the Marshall plan for Eu
ropean recovery, he said "yes
until Europe is on its feet.
We can't go it alone."
On the CVA, he said he was
opposed.
Answering criticism of oppon
ents that he has voted too often
with the democratic majority,
Morse said he had agreed with
Senator Taft of Ohio the re
publican leader more often
than he had disagreed.
He expanded on these and
some other points, and gave
brief, although rarely one-sen
tence, answers on others.
Morse's broadcast was about
the wind-up of his campaign
for renomination. He has told
republicans throughout the state
ha wants to go back to the sen
ate a "free man, and not with
his vote dictated by any one or
any group."
Morse has charged his oppon
ents with waging the worst
"smear" campaign in 25 years
of Oregon elections.
Laws Making
Law Violators
Boston, May 18 VP) U. S.
Steel President Benjamin Fair
less said today "when every bus
inessman in America can be
found guilty of violating the
law, then there is something
wrong with the law and not
the businessman."
Fairless attacked what he
called the "complete hodge
podge of so-called 'anti-trust'
laws" In a speech at Boston's
mid-century jubilee.
U. S. Steel has figured in a
congressional - investigation of
the steel industry to determine
if monopolistic practices are be
ing employed.
". . . The minute any man
successfully establishes himself
In any business nowadays,
Fairless declared, "he automati
cally becomes a potential Jail
bird."
Laws governing American
business are not written in con
srest but in the courts, he said,
and the supreme court's interpre
tation of the law may be vast
ly different" from the original
Intent of congress in drafting
the legislation.
If a businessman and his com
petitor quote the same price on
a product, Fairless said, they
may be accused of colusion and
violation of the Sherman act.
If one tries to undersell his
competitor by cutting his price
he may be violating the Rob-inson-Patman
act, he added.
ITU Election .
To Be Close
Indianapolis, May 18 ) C.
G. Spark man of Detroit held a
thin lead over incumbent Wood
ruff Randolph today in their
bitter battle for the presidency
of the AFL Typographical un
ion. Returns from 40 locals, repre
senting more than one fourth of
the total membership, gave
Sparkman a margin of 38 votes.
The totals at that point were 9,
886 for Sparkman and 9,830 for
Randolph.
The same 40 locals gave Ran
dolph a majority of more than
2000 votes in his victory over
John R. Evans of Washington.
D C, two years ago.
The total vote is expected to
exceed 65.000.
New York City, with 320 of
875 chapels counted, gave Ran
doloh a majority of less than 1,
000. That same local gave him a
lead of almost 2,500 in 1048.
Washington voted for Spark
man by more than 700 votes, al
though his margin was less than
Evans obtained in his home city
two years ago.
Randolph saw his majorities
reduced from 1948 in many of
the locals he carried. He gained
ground in Richmond, Vs., Ro
chester, N.Y., and Louisville.
Sparkman scored heavily in
Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Denver,
Indianapolis and Columbus, O.

$15,000 western open golf cham
pionship starts a four-day run
today with the defending chanv
pion, Sam Snead, unanimously
elected the man to beat for the
$2,600 winner's purse.
With such heralded rivals as
Ben Hogan and Jimmy Demar-

this 47th edition of the famed
tournament, this man Snead
merited the load of favoritism.
Actually, the supporting cast
is probably the weakest in the
