WIL Balk Record Broken
Within First Two Days
By HOWARD APPLEGATE
(United Preu SporU Wrilerl
Tacoma, Wash., April 21 (U.F9
It took only two nays for the
Western International baseball
balk record to be broken, but
most of the other records look
. like they might stand the test
of another season or two.
The season record of four
balks in one game weri by the
boards last night when Al Trei
chel of Wenatchce was charged
with five. The old mark had
been held Jointly by three pitch
ers. Other records under fire will
be Jim Warner's 43 home runs
for Wenatchee last year; Archie

Giants' Fielder
He's Not Close
By MILTON RICHMAN
(United Preai SporU Writer)
New York, April 21 UPJ It's
downright flattering to be com
pared with Joe DiMaggio,
agreed Booby Thomson of the
Giants today, but he blurted,
"It's also a lot of baloney."
For years the Giants have
been insisting that in Thomson
they have "the Joe DiMaggio
of the National league." Occas
ionally, the good-looking, 27-year-old
outfielder from Glas
gow, Scotland, even has looked
the part.
"Let's not kid ourselves,"
Thomson declared, "DiMag
gio is the perfect player while
I'm not even close.
"I still make a lot of mis
takes and there are many
things I have to learn. Maybe
I should be satisfied with
what I have done so far but
I'm not. Far. from it. I'm not
easily satisfied."
Thomson batted .309 last sea
son and was one of the few
bright spots in an otherwise
lusterless array. He's had a mis
erable spring, however, a cir
cumstance that doesn't bother
him a bit.
"I've never been a world
beater in the spring," he shrug
ged. "It takes me a little while
to get untracked. I know that
I'm In good shape and that I'll
come around soon."
The square-jawed Giant fly
chaser ran a hand through his
hair and looked over toward
where Manager Leo Durocher
was standing.
"There," he said, pointing
to Durocher, "is the fellow
who has helped me the most
He and Mel Ott. Both of them
taught me a great deal."

and Edo Vanni's 1948 Spokane
record of 198 singles.
The 1940 Spokane club also
holds the league batting
crown with a .315 mark while
Earl Kuper of Tacoma holds
the all-time individual batting
lead with .389 in 111 games
in 1947. Jolley holds the rec
ord of runs batted in with 181
in 1940 and is the only man
ever to win two league batting
titles, in 1940 and 41.
Yakima's record of 35 runs in
one game in 1947 stands; as does
the combination of 43 runs put
together by Salem and Wenat

him. He had just finished go

weaknesses of the Boston Brav

back on the field.
"Okay," he barked. "Let's
go get 'em today."
Thomson punched his glove
idly once or twice and com
mented: "I like playing for Leo
and I like the way he plays
ball. He never sits back on
the bench waiting for the
home run.

of Wenatchee last year set a
mark of hitting in 36 consecutive
contests.
Among the pitchers, Don Os
born of Vancouver holds the
most number of league victories,
89, rung up between 1938 and
1942. Exactly 20 WIL hurlers
have notched 20 or more vic
tories in a season, but no hurler
has done it more than once.
Osborn is the only twirler to
lead the loop in won-lost per
centages twice, doing so in 1941
and '42.
Other pitchers' records in
clude Harold Anderson's 11-1
record for Vancouver last year
as the highest percentage;
Joe Blankenship's 25 wins for
Victoria in 1948; Frank Nel
sons 12 victories for Spokane
in '48; Hub Kittle's 71 losses
during six seasons with four
different clubs; Bob Drilling's
23 losses for Yakima in 1948;
296 strikeouts by Victoria's
Bob Jensen in 1946; Jensen's
individual strikeout mark of
19 against Wenatchee in 1946
and four balks in one season
held by three pitchers.
Floyd Isckite of Tacoma pitch
ed the only nine-inning no-hit
no-run game in the league's
history in 1939 against Wenat
chee. Four pitchers hold seven
inning no-hitters Floyd Bevens
of Wenatchee, Bob Kinnaman of
Spokane, Cy Greenlaw of Ta
coma and Ken Wyatt of Salem.
Not to forget the fielders,
Bob Garretson of Tacoma
holds the highest mark for
first basemen with a .996 av
erage In 1940; John Kerr of
Vancouver leads second sack
ers with .972 in 1938; Ted
Jennings set the mark of .961
for the third basemen while
with Yakima last season and
Ike Peterson of Lewiston's
1937 entry still holds the
shortstop fielding mark of
.955.
Henry Bonetti, a 1939 Wen
atchee outfielder, leads the field
for those positions with a .988
mark; Yakima's Louis Lor en z
set the catcher's fielding mark
in 1939 with .988.
