Vancouver Game on Friday
By FRED ZIMMERMAN
It wasn't found necessary, to
scrape the frost off the green
sward at Geo. E. Waters ball
park Thursday night, but if pro
ceedings had been extended to
a much later hour it might well
have happened.
Temperatures eight or 10 de
grees above the freezing point
are not conducive to attendance
at any, outdoor activity and just
324 shivering fans showed.
Those who sat through the two
hours and 24 minutes of com
petition were awarded by seeing
tile - Salem Senators triumph
over the Tacoma Tigers, 10 to 7.
It was the first Solon win for
Manager Ad Liska.
Perhaps it was the fact that
Airs. Ad was a member of the
skimpy audience that brought
victory. If that be the case
then the former Beaver sub
marine chucker would do well
to move his family to the capi
tal posthaste.

Tiger
much tighter defense and
more base blows at the plate.
The pitching was on the wild
side and the three chuckers em
ployed by Salem issued 12
passes. . Bob Stevenson, back in
the game after a year's absence,
ran into difficulty at the outset
and after walking four in a row,
John Tierney, a new addition,
took over. Tierney, former Salt
Lake City chucker in the Pio
neer league, went in with the
bases loaded, and one out. He
got the side out with little diffi
culty but four runs had scored
to give the Tiges quite an ad
vantage. Tierney did a right smart
job during the next three in
nings but tired in the fifth .
and was replaced by Dick
Waibel. Waibel, called upon
for relief duty for the second
time in three nights, blanked
the Tigers the rest of the way.
The Senators fought back
right from the beginning as they
jumped on Gil Loust (pro
nounced Lust with a" long "u")
for three tallies. A walk to Gene
Gaviglio, Wayne Peterson's dou
ble to right, singles by Dick Bar
tie and Mel Wasley, plus a boot
brought in three runs.
Salem tied it up in the second
as Nick Muti got the first of his
three hits and went on to third
on Glenn Stetter's wild heave
from left field. Tierney imme
diately brought him home with
a base slap over second.
The Senators salted the tilt
in the third as they scored
four runs on singles by Orren
Snyder and Muti, a double by
Gaviglio, plus two Tiger mis
cues. They added two more
just to make the thing sure in
the seventh. This time it was
Hal Zurcher's double that
touched off the fireworks.
Muti produced another single
and Zurcher scored on a per
fect squeeze play with Waibel
at the bat. Gaviglio then pro
duced his second double of the
night.
John Burak, right hander
from late last season, will toil
against the Vancouver Caps at
8:15 Friday night.
Elsewhere in the league Spo
kane edged Victoria 16 to 15 to
give the Indians undisputed pos
session of first place. The first
casualty of the season occurred
when Catcher Ed Nulty of Spo
kane broke an ankle- sliding in
to third. Yakima blanked We-
natchee, 6-0, while Tri-City
nosed Vancouver, 8-7. All told
22 pitchers toiled over the cir
cuit. .

Slick Triple Play Insures
9-1 Bevo Win Over Oaks
By JIM HUBBART
A triple play isn't much to
watch, really. It's one of those
baseball phenomena which
comes perhaps once or twice in
a season and happens so fast
you have to take the loudspeak
er's word for it. Take the one at
Oakland last night for instance.
The Portland Beavers effected
the Pacific Coast league's first
triple play of the season and
used it to wipe out a ninth in
ning Oakland rally and insure
a 9 to 1 triumph.
Only it went by so fast that
few fans appreciated it. Billy
Herman and George Metkovich
of Oakland were on first and sec
ond via walks. Then Earl Rapp
slammed a line drive toward
Portland Second Baseman Eddie
Baslnski.
Basinski came up with it,
Salem, Oregon, Friday, April 21, 1950
made in the Itickreall, Lucki
amutc, Salt creek and Mill
creek in Polk county with sin
gle eggs, or spinners and
worms proving the best lure.
The streams on the West slope
of the Coast range are still too
high for the best angling.
Snow runoff is the cause.
The Tillamook, Ncstucca
and Necanicum are yielding
good cutthroat catches on spin
ner and worm. If clear wea
ther holds streamer or buck
tail fly fishing should be
good in tidewater. Surf perch
are being taken at Nehalem
bay and Tillamook bay jetty.
Many limit catches reported
from the coast streams in Lin
coln, Lane and Douglas coun
ties although some murky wa
ter is reported. Best results
expected in the lakes of the
Florence area. .
In Clackamas county some
stcclhead have been taken be
low the River Mill dam.

five hit ball for the Ports,
feel great.
This was just one phase of an
evening which also produced a
four hit shutout by Red Embree
and two homers with the bases
loaded all in different ball
parks.
Embree, who came to the San
Diego Padres from the St. Louis
Browns by way of Cleveland, set
the Los Angeles Angels down, 6
to 0, without allowing a man to
reach second. He personally con
tributed a run to the San Diego
cause, too, with a sixth inning
single.
It was Seattle's 13th loss in
14 starts. Manager Paul Rich
ards juggled his batting order
and lineup in wholesale fash
ion last night, figuring things
couldn't get much worse. They
did, though. Hollywood won
by 15 to 4 in a performance
embellished with a seven run
eighth inning and Frank Rel
iefer's pinch hit homer with
the bases full in the fifth.
The game started as a pitching
duel between Con Dempsey and
Sacramento's Bill Bevens, but
ended in the hickory heroics of
the squat Seal first baseman.
Fleming batted in six of San
Francisco's runs. His single in
the eighth accounted for two.
At Sacramento, Les Fleming's
ninth inning roundtripper with
the sacks loaded gave the San

over Sacramento.
Tonight, San Francisco will
pitch Southpaw Al Lien (2-0) at
Sacramento's Max Surkont (4

Seattle (Guy Fletcher, 1-1) at

Portland (Jack Creel, 1-1) at
