Wallace says the Russians eventually may outdo the United States in following the "teach tags of Jesus Christ." Wallace cautioned in an Easter broadcast that "our danger is that the Russians will eventually develop a greater capacity to understand and cure the suf fering of the world than we." "But in the brotherly compe tition of service," he added, "I would like to see the United States demonstrate to the world how far a Judo-Christian nation can go," Johnny Longden is in his 24th year of riding on recognized American tracks. Shryock, Latest Addition Capitol Shopping Center In a little over a year Salem's Capital Shopping center has grown from one business firm, Berg's Super Market, to 11 firms, ranging from the large super market to clothing stores. The newest store to join group in the $2,000,000 shopping center of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance company, is a men's wear store, Shryock. Owned by Ward Shryock who has been in the men's wear business since 1933, the store is modern in design, with plate glass windows forming both the front and back wall of the build ing store. Associated in the business with Shryock is to be his brother-in- law, Charles Bonderer. Open ing date for this store is Wednes day with the hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Opening date of Berg's super market was March 31, 1949. The large self-service market, oper ated by Elmer Berg, grocer in Salem since 1936, contains 15, 700 square feet of floor space. The main floor is 100 feet by 120 fct and the second level is ap proximately 36 feet wide and ex tends across the entire east end of the building. Sears Roebuck was the second business firm to open in the cen ter. That date was August 11. 1949. This building contains a basement and two other floorsj and has 77,827 square feet. Pre vious to this, the firm had a store in downtown Salem, coming to the city about 11 years ago. To the back of the building is the service station of the firm. This Sears building contains four other firms, all of which have the most modern equipment and design. The firms and date of their opening are Aces Barber shop, September, 1949; Ken nedy's Cleaners, November, 1949; Haley's Beauty shop, De cember, 1949; and Jary Florist, February, 1950. November 4, 1949 marked the opening date for the Kress store here. The store, the only one in Oregon outside Portland, has a frontage of 75 feet and a depth of 125 feet. Modern in every detail the selling space of the store occupies the first floor. A ladies readv-to-wpar srfnrA Hughes, opened in the Capitol Shopping Center in mid-November. 1949. , This store located directly across from Sears Roebuck, is the 53rd store of the firm An german Co., Inc., which has stores in 51 cities in 17 states. There is more than 6,000 square feet of floor space in the store. Margwins, owned and oper ated by Mr. and Mrs. William L. Allen and Margaret Allen, opened in the shopping center November 18, 1949. The store, which has a frontage of 25 feet and a depth of 125 feet, spe cializes in gift articles and chil dren s attire. Formal opening was held April 6, for the Owl Drug store, located on Center and Capitol streets. The firm which has 100 stores on the Pacific coast, opened the store for business March 16. The store has 6,250 square feet of floor space and 1,550 square yards of glass in its windows, which form most of the exterior walls. These doors will swing wide Wednesday with the hours for the opening 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Rent Control Ended In 763 Communities Chicago, April 11 (U.PJ Muni cipal or federal agencies abolish ed rent controls in 736 communi ties during the first year of the new federal rent act, and six states lifted or altered federal rent controls, the American Municipal association reported today. In some of the cities, the re turn of a "freeze market" in the rental field has produced dis agreement as to whether more housing was made available im mediately, or will be in the fu ture, a United Press survey showed. The association reported that 246 cities decontrolled rents through municipal action, while the federal housing expediter lifted controls in 417 other com munities. Under the 1949 rent act, con trols may be removed by local action and nine cities with more than 100,000 population have taken advantage of the new provision. The largest cities which took voluntary decontrol, action are: Dallas, Tex.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Long Beach, Calif.; Norfolk, Va.; Salt Lake City, Utah, and Wichitai lian. Talle, Jr., 37-year-old retired cattle baron, went on trial here Mon day charged with the Christmas eve murder, of his attractive, blonde wife. His wife, Margaret Lee Talle, 29, was found dead in the patio of their luxurious $50,000 ranch type home in the Los Gatos hills, shot twice in the chest by .44 caliber bullets. Talle has refused to discuss the case with investigators and declined to testify before the grand jury which indicted him January 9. The death of Mrs. Talle was reported to the sheriff's office by Talle's attorney, James Boc cardo, of San Jose. Investiga tors, who took Talle into cus tody at the attorney's office, said he had been there three hours before they were notified. Friends said the couple had domestic difficulties. At one time Mrs. Talle started a suit for separate maintenance and at that time left a "mysterious let ter with her attorney to be opened in the event of her death. The couple later reconciled, but the letter is expected to play an important part in the trial. which gives promise' of becoming a legal marathon, Talle inherited most of his cat tle interests from his father, a wealthy New Mexico rancher. He attended the New Mexico Military Institute and was known as a polo player. He met Mrs. Talle, the for mer Margaret Lee Edwards of Alamosa, Colo., in a Denver hotel where she was a cashier. They were married in 1945 and came to the Santa Clara valley in 1947. Goodwin to Defend Wilson Brothers Portland ,Ore., April 11 (U.FS Portland Attorney Irvin Good man has decided to defend Tur man and Utah Wilson, accused of the kidnap-slaying of Joann Dewey, because "I believe in their innocence," he said today. Goodman said he has question ed both brothers exhaustively and obtained "documentary evi dence" supporting their claim. The attorney pointed out that the Washington court must grant him permission to appear in Van couver and that he must have a lawyer from that state as an associate. In a statement Monday, Good man asked "what efforts are be- ' ing made" to apprehend other suspects in the murder. The Wilsons are being held without bail and their arraign ment is planned later this week. Clark county officers said. Road Oiling Bids to Be Called April 24 The state highway commission announced today it would open bids on three projects at Its Port land meeting April 24 and 25. The projects are, in addition to those already announced. The projects include: Clackamas county Reoiling 32 miles of Woodburn-Estacada, Cascade, Clackamas and Mt. Hood highways.
