; 1 16 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Tuesday, April 11, 1950 Another Capital Journal Best-Seller s A Rage to Live By JOHN O'HARA SYNOPSIS: Grace Caldwell Tate, who owns a lot of property around Fort Penn, Pa., including an im pressive block of stock in the Sentinel, is becoming Interested in Jack Holllater, the City Editor (who plana to become a column ist). Grace haa been a widow aince her husband died of Polio in 1917. As Jack's wife. Amy, clearly remembers, there has been a certain amount of talk about the rich Mrs, Tate. And Amy doesn't like It. Meanwhile Jack's brother-in-law Charlie Jay, an old flame of Grace's, has just been elected mayor of Fort Penn. Now go on with the story CHAPTER 30 There was a single telephone pay station booth Just Inside the Bos- ton store, and it almost never was occupied because customers who wished to use the telephone made for the battery of six booths near the center of the store. Grace finally picked the receiver off the hook and called Holllater. "Conm-atulations." she said. "I have read your first column in the Sentinel, and I think It's a very excellent, ajmuintr article." "Well, thank you very much," he said. "I can see that you're a talented writer even if It didn't have the effect of cheering: me ud." "Could I cheer you up? Or could I take your mind off your troubles?" "on, couia you noti- sne saia "Well, what do "No. not today," she said. "Well, when?" "When?" said. "When and where? We'd have to think of where, too. Yaissle's Is a little bit too pub lic for a man with a wife and two children and a widow with two chil dren." "Yes, but it's a good-sized oity at least we like to think so." "It's still too small for us to be seen together, Jack." "Thank you for Jack." "And thank you for Grace, even u you naven t said it yet. Why did I suddenly call you by your first nomey" "Because you're upset about some thing and you need a friend to talk to." "I guess you're right, but if I'm a iriena m leave you alone." "That wouldn't be a friendly act, not when I've wanted to talk to you." .. "What about?" , "I'll tell you when I see you." 'That had better be a long time from now," said Grace. , "Don't you ever go for a ride in your Mercer in this nice weather?" ; "Not in the Mercer, but I have a Ford coupe I drive." '. "You have? When'd you get that? It's even better." "I bought it last fall. It's handy for shopping and going back and forth from the farm in nasty weath er. Why is it better than the Mer cer?" "Inconsplclous." "Yes. that's true. I could be a doctor, or a visiting nurse, couldn't 17" "Take a ride down toward Em eryville tomorrow and Just before you gee to Emeryville you Know where the main road makes a right angle turn" "Yes." "Well, keep going straight instead of making the turn. I'll be up that road about a half a mile. It's in pretty good condition." "How do you know it so well?" "I was over it this morning, look ing at an old stone house that Wash ington was supposed to have slept in. E wrote a column about it." "But then there'll be hundreds of people looking at it." "The article won't appear till Monday." "What time shall I be there?" said Orace. "Three o'clock? Is that convenient Tor you?" "Yes," she said. "But if you change your mind, III understand." "I'll understand if you do, too." "Ill be there, but I almost wish rou won't be." "If you're there youH see me," he said. It was the next day, Saturday. He got out of his car as she stopped at the side of the road. He was smiling as he came toward her. 'It isn't so damn inconspicuous," he snld. "My Ford?" she said, smiling. "It's a Ford, but it doesn't look like any visiting nurses's car I ever (aw. It's painted like a Plcrce-Ar-rowr, and wire wheels." "Well, at least it isn't a Mercer," he said, "r had it painted and var nished at Mr. Sullivan's. Do you think it's too conspicuous? Do you think I ought to muddy it up?" "I'd be a shame. It doesn't even look as if it'd ever been rained in." "Of course not. It's washed after every rnln." "What color do you call this?" "Victoria blue," she said. "What tolor do you call your car?" "Your car," he said. "No, your car," she said. "That's yours, too," he said. "That belongs to the Sentinel." "It does? How nlcel When did you get it?" "I didn't get it. but I can use it whenever I can get my hands on it." "Then you got rid of the city car?" she said. "I got rid of it the same night! you told me to. I drove it straight to tne city garage." "I'm so glad you did that. I was so worried you wouldn't that I never asked about it." "Will you have a cigarette?" "Yes. thanks." she said. They lit their cigarettes, and while they were so doing a farmer with a i manure spreader and a team of I mules went by at a walk. "Hyuh." said the farmer, and Holllster re-j plied the same. The farmer kept! going. I guess he saw your cigarette. so he knows I'm not Just helping a laay in aisiress. "But he didn't see mv cigarette. and you are helping a lady In distress." Two automobiles together here is the same as a traffic tieup in town." said Houister. Are you still In dis tress? How do you feel todav?" "Are you worried about that farm er?" "I don't like what he's probably thinking." "Don't forget I'm a farmer, and I know what farmers think, too." she said. "Then you know what he's thinking." "Yes. but' I know he's wrong. So win anyone else be that ever thinks that about us." "Will they?" he said. "Yes," she said. "They'll always be wrong?" "Yes, always," she said. "That's now it'll have to be. eo you can always go home and face your wife and children with a clear con science." I dldn t think that was the wav it was going to be, Grace," he said. "No. and yesterday It wouldn't have been. That's why I didn't want to see you yesterday. wnat Happened yesterday?" 'I'll tell you some time. It had nothing to do with you. What hap pened and what I lust said are two separate things." iney don't seem to be." "No. not the wav I tell It. but the way I felt about you yesterday, mat was because 1 nad seen vou alter so Jong without seeing vou. The things that happened that un set me, they were Just I quarreled with two women. And I did need a friend, you were right. I was sunk." "Are you In love with me?" he said. She did not answer. "Are you, Grace?" She still did not answer. "No?" he said. She did not speak. "Yes?" he sold. "I've only said that to two men In my life, and I've only meant it once. "Which time did you mean it?" "My husband." she said. "Not Roger Bannon." he said. "No, I didn't love him." she said. "Don't ask me if I love you. Maybe what I feel Is only what I felt for Hoger Bannon." "I wish vou felt for me the wav you aia lor iiannon, ne said. You see. Jack? That's whv- what the farmer was thinking has to oe wrong." He smiled at her. "And what I was thinking, too," he said. "Will you kiss me, orace?" "i want to kiss you." she said. He kissed her and she him and she did not resist. He made a stOD at the paner on his way home, but no one meaning Amy naa teiepnonea. Nothing in Amy's greeting, no conversation at supper, no incident or question In the course of the Saturday night at home confirmed his suspicion mat mere nno Dcen or would be an accident to the storv he had cooked up for his afternoon. "Did vou work late?" Amv had said. "Not whnt you'd call work," he had replied. "I took the car and drove down to Emeryville again. You know, the George Washington stuff, for Monday. It was a good excuse to go for a ride." 'Think up a good excuse so we can all go lor a ride some Sundav.' "All right. I could probablv get tne car any sundav I ask for It. but I don't want lo ask lor too many favors till my column makes an impression." And men don't ask for favors. ask for a raise." she lind said. In June. If the readers like the column."
