; !14 Capital Journal, Salem, ICiner's Homer Mark Hopes Rest Upon 3 By BOB MYERS t ! . (AP Newsfeaturu) .1 SanBernardino, Calif. Home Sun Slugger Ralph Kiner is a confident young man but he isn't given to making lavish promises, . So the $65,000-a-year hero of the Pittsburgh Pirates is on rec ord this season only as hoping - for a bright year. But he might just produce the first National League threat to Babe Ruth's Jall-tlme record of 60 homers -since Hack Wilson slammed out HB for a loop record with the Chicago Cubs in 1930. Kiner connected with 54 round .trippers .last .season, "..with previous year marks of -23, 51 and 40. .The astonish ing fact is that the handsome -190-pounder from Alhambra, jCalif., labored under perhaps -vfthe worst physical handicap ;iince he belted his way into the majors. .Z He was hit by a line drive in -sin exhibition game with the Chicago White Sox that side -lined him for a spell, and de cayed his training program. T ' For most of the regular sea- , Spn, he was hampered by a bronchial codition, and in the " All-Star game he pulled a tendon in his right hand that forced ; him to wear a leather support- ing strap. THUMBNAIL PREVIEW PITTSBURGH PIRATES Pitching Improved Catching Average Hitting Fine Infield Questionable Outfield Good j The records show that Kiner staged a Garrison finish to hit Jhe 54-homer mark, closing the Reason with a rush that netted !27 homers in the final two months, which was more than "he collected in the first three 'and a half months of the cam paign. i Kiner was able to hit only Jtwo homeruns in the first 16 jgames, and he only had 11 after -elmost six weeks of play. At the mid-season point he had 27 and few believed he'd wind up ;With anywhere near the total he Accumulated. 3 Kiner, pinned down, will point out that It Is harder for a righthand hitter to connect for the circuit than for left handers. The reason Is ele mental ''In most major lea gue parks, the left field fences arc further away than right field fences." As a matter of fact, Cincin nati is the lone exception to the Heath Inks Suds Baseball Terms Seattle, April 11 W1 - Out fielder Jeff Heath wore the uni form of the Seattle Rainiers to day as the climax to more than two months of contract negoti ations with the Pacific Coast league baseball club. Earl Sheely, Rainiers general manager, disclosed the contract signing last night, but the terms were not made public. Observ ers believed, however, It was the highest salary in the PCL. Heath and Sheely have been dickering both here and at the former Boston Braves' farm at Bow, Wash. "I've gotten the big league bug out of my system," Heath said. "AH I want to do now is help Seattle win some ball games." VIIIIOII WIICOMI Ofi ml Amiln't OlYMPIA iIWIN COMfANV Olrmvta. WnMln. U.S. A. Thus far he hasn't been blessed with tremendous help from hitters behind him, such as the immortal Ruth had in the immortal Lou Gehrig. Kiner doesn't make a point of this, but it holds true. His admirers, including; his No. 1 Booster his mother hopes this will be remedied this sea son. And Kiner hopes for some thing else that the pitchers will pitch to him this campaign. He was handed 117 walks last sea son to lead the league. He'd just as soon someone else at tained that distinction. Walks do not make for base hits, in cluding homeruns.
