Voting long since has been
over, the names of the winners
are sealed in white envelopes,
and all the nervous nominees
wished the ordeal were over.
The festivities lead off at 8 p.
m. and everybody who is any
body in glitterland will be
dressed up in minks and satins
and tuxedoes to jam into the
Hollywood Pantages theater.
Paul Douglas, who used to be
a sports announcer, will emcee
the shindig. He has his orders
to keep things rolling. This
means just one thing: Throttle
any gushing winner who feels an
oration coming on.
"I'll do my best," Douglas said.
"But I've never been to an Acad
emy thing before."
His two assistants, Ronald
Reagan and Eve Arden, will be
on the sidelines to broadcast any
humorous incidents, mishaps, or
hair-pulling.
There's bound to be something
going on. Hollywood tempera
ments are touchy things at best;
and come "Oscar" time they're
apt to wear a mite thin. One
year, for instance, Olivia De
Havilland snubbed sister Joan
Fontaine who dashed backstage
to congratulate her on her shiny
new "Oscar."
The tension is heavy this year,
with two close races going on.
The know-it-alls will tell you
the "best actor" award is a toss-
up between Broderick Crawford
for "All the King's Men" and
Kirk Douglas for "Champion."
Also in the running are Greg
ory Peck. Richard Todd, and
John Wayne.
As for the women stars, book
ies are giving Olivia ("The Heir
ess") De Havilland the edge over
Susan ("My Foolish Heart )
Hayward. But one year Loretta
Young pulled a surprise upset
when everybody thought Rosa
lind Russell was a cinch winner.
Miss Young's a contender this
year, too, as are Jeanne Crame
and Deborah Kerr.
