    Stock Market
In Slow Decline
New York, March 17 W) The
stock market went into a slow
decline today after an early try
at higher prices failed to get
nywhere.
Losses were fractional and a
good many issues held on to
morning gains.
In mid-morning a burst of de
mand for automobile stocks act
ed as a tonic on the entire mar
ket. These shares held up better
than most but sold well under
their best levels.
Rapid turnover developed
during the morning. Business
slackened, though, as quota
tions were marked down. Turn
over was at a rate of around 1,
600,000 shares for the full ses
sion. American Car & Foundry pre
ferred and common went into a
steep plunge following news late
yesterday that directors had de
ferred action on a prefeyed div
idend. The preferred lost 10
and the common 414 at one
time but rallied slightly under
consideration.
