for the state department of edu-
cation. At the same time a let
ter was read from W. H. Baillie,
secretary of the Salem Knife and
Fork club, praising the manner
which Leslie junior highs
auditorium was prepared and
maintained during the appear
ance of Henry Scott, pianist.
'The Salem public schools
keep the most minute, accurate
and detailed records of their
transportation system that I
know of," wrote Wright. "The
Salem school buses are probab
ly maintained better than any
district in the state and they are
certainly operated more econ
omically. ..HI were to choose
a model school transportation
setup in the state I would have
to pick that of the Salem school
district."
The board adopted Superin
tendent Frank Bennett's recom
mendations concerning teacher
tenure, recognized several res
ignations and instructed the
clerk to write letters af appreci
ation to Lillian McKay and Flor
ence A. Whelan who will have
reached the retirement age at
the close of the present school
year. Mrs. McKay is a teacher
at Hayesville and Mrs. Whelan
is a Liberty instructor.

granted use of the third floor of
the old Washington building for
a spring show and the Evangel
istic Temple was authorized to
use the high school auditorium
May 21 and 28 when a nine year
old girl evangelist will be feat
ured. Resignations were accepted
from Jean Spaulding, Phyllis
Goakey, Shirley Sue Noerz, Wil
ma Hammond, Clarice Akerson,
Evelyn A. Smith and Marilyn
Wickert.
Barbara Egelston, T h e 1 m a
Lindstrom, Grace Stenback, Ma
dalene Suko and Fay More were
hired on an assigned substitute
basis.
The board authorized the pur
chase of a tractor and certain
pieces of equipment for use on
school grounds. The equipment
will be added to from time to
time.
The board is expected to take
advantage of an offer of the Fed
