Girl' Life Hangs
On Grafting Skin
Santa Rosa. Calif., March 13
tm six doctors prepared to
start today the tedious job of
grafting skm from up to a dozen
donors to the badly-burned body
of nine-yeair-old Sandra . Em-
mert.
Her life hangs on the success
of the operations, doctors said.
Sandra suffered burns over
75 per cent of her body when
her party dress was set afire by
a gas heater three months ago.
The six physicians will worlc
in teams, one unit removing a
skin strip from a donof, the
other grafting the strip to the
child's body. Each graft will
require at least two hours work.
The doctors planned to com
plete a minimum of six grafts.
Twelve volunteer donors were
on hand in case more prove nec
essary. The average graft will be a
strip about three by six inches,
about half the normal thickness
of the skin.
More than 100 persons an
swered an appeal for skin and
blood donors for Sandra.
The child requires a blood
transfusion every other day be
cause she bleeds profusely eacn
time her bandages are changed.
The doctors explained she was
unable to manufacture enough
blood to replace the loss.

For 'Little Joe'
Fort Monmouth, N.J., March
13 (fP) It looked like curtains
for b while out in Chicago for
Little Joe, an army signal corps
carrier pigeon.
Nobody knows how Little
Joe, who chalked up a distin
guished war record in Italy, ev
er got from Fort Monmouth to
Chicago,
But there he was, lying nearly
frozen on a sidewalk in the win
dy city nine days ago. He was
picked up, given the equiva
lent of a hot foot bath and mus
tard plaster, and sent home on
an airplane by Chicago authori
ties. The plane was held up half an
hour for the war hero and he
rode in a special cage in the pi-
lots compartment.
At Newark airport yesterday,
Little Joe got a hero's welcome
from a Fort Monmouth delega
tion.
He was given a special feed
ing, a thorough physical check
up and welcomed back by his
signal corps buddies.
Lady's Right to Cuss
Case fo Be Reheard
Washington, March 13 W)
The case of a lady's right to cuss
on the job was handed back to
day for a new hearing.
The national labor relations
board set aside earlier findings
on Mrs. Edna Rugglcs, who was
fired by the Indianapolis Giove
Co., Marion, Ind., last year for
persistent swearing.
The AFL International Giove
Workers union appealed her
case, and in September an NLRB
trial examiner recommended she
be rehired.
At that point Mrs. Buggies re
marked: "I'm pretty damn tir
ed of the whole thing." But to
day the board, by a 3 to 1 vote,
wiped out the examiner's report
and ordered a rehearing of such
other disposition of the case as
the regional ILRB director
finds advisable.

Denies Romance
Hollywood, March 13 (ff)
Shirley Temple is in love with
Hawaii but apparently not with
the pineapple heir who escorted
her around the romantic Islands.
She arrived last night by air
from a seven weeks vacation in
Hawaii and immediately denied
reports which linked her roman
tically with Charles Black, 31-year-oid
son of a pineapple com

"They (the reports) make me

She added, however, that she
would like to return to Hawaii.
Tn really In lov with the

She also disclosed that she
had received a cablegram from
John Agar, her divorced hus

My feelings are still the same
