Note 4-K Week
More than 28,000 Oregon 4-H
club members are joining tha
nation this week in celebrating
National 4-H club week, accord
ing to L. J. Allen, state 4-H club
leader.
Oregon club members last
year participated in 35,488 proj
ects. They completed 81 percent
of them. This percentage com
pares favorably with the 1948
club year when 77 percent of
the projects were carried
through to completion.
The project total also shows a
gain compared with the 1948
club year when slightly mora
than 31,000 were carried by
youngsters enrolled.
...
The Oregon club program also
reached a new all-time high
in 1949 in terms of club num
bers. There were 3206 clubs in
1949 as compared with 2675 for
the year preceding The club
year runs from November 1
through to October 31 the fol
lowing year.
Success of the Oregon 4-H
club program is due largely to
the work of 3000 volunteer 4-H
club leaders who give their
time and "know-how" In in
structing their youthful charges.
The leaders conduct club meet
ings and provide inspiration and
leadership.
Allen said Oregon is one of
the leading 4-H club states In
terms of enrollment as com
pared to the number of eli
gible rural youngsters. He es
timates that 16,000 of tha
63,000 Oregon rural homes are
represented by 4-H club
members.
Club work, however, is not
restricted to rural youth. Tha
4-H program has been active
within the city of Portland for
more than 25 years, and during
the past year a full time county
extension agent has been em
ployed to foster club work in
Salem.
At the present time, there ara
approximately 2,000,000 4-H
club members in the United
States. During the 35 years that
the 4-H club program has been
carried on as a work of the U.S.
department of agriculture, mora
than 14,000,000 club boys and
girls have participated.
