First Federal Buys Building The First Federal Savings and Loan association, for many years located at 142 South Lib erty street, announces purchase from Leo N. Childs of the build ing at 129 North Commercial that once housed the old Capital National bank. The First National was later located there, and the most re cent occupant was the Huggins Insurance agency, now in its own building on North Church. Expansion of business made a new location necessary for the savings and loan association, which formerly was known as the Mutual Federal Savings and Loan association. Directors of the association said they liked the location of the old bank buil ding, and that its facilities, in cluding vaults, are in good con dition. Remodeling will start at once, including removal of the historic and impressive stone front, and a more modern front will re place it. The association expects to occupy the location by July 1. It was built in 1892 by the late Fred Erixon, contractor, and was designed by Stanford White, New York architect who design ed the Portland Union depot and the Portland hotel. The turreted front of the building has long been a landmark of Commercial street and a decorative feature is a large replica of the old Bea ver gold dollar that was current in Oregon in provisional gov ernment days. Predecessor of the new owner of the building was the first fe deral and loan association in Sa lem. Assets now total $1,800,- 000. Officers are: John H. Car kin, president; J. C.
