Simple Surgery
Fixes Flat Feet
v By PAUL F. ELLIS
(United Preai Bdence Editor)
New York. Feb. 15 U.R A
comparatively simple operation
will correct many cases of in
herited flat feet, a group of west
coast physicians reported today.
The best results, doctors said,
ari nMninpri when the ODera-
tion is performed in the child's
early life. Their study snows
that some of the patients passed
nrmv nhvsiral examinations and
served in the infantry in the last
war.
The work was reported by
Drs. John C. Manning. C. W.
Lambert and Ralph B. Miller,
of the Los Angeles, Calif., Ortho
paedic hospital, in connection
with the opening of the 17th an
nual meeting of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Sur
geons. The nation's top bone ex
perts are attending the sessions,
Results of the Los Angeles
doctors' work were shown for
. the first time in the east in an
exhibit. They reported on a
. survey of 74 flat foot surgical
. operations in a ten-year period,
involving 38 patients who co
operated in a follow-up examin
ation program.
Of the 38 cases, 35 patients
. reported they 4 feel better,' and
most of them said they "play
all games desired."
The operatoin, according to
Dr. Lambert, usually involves
making only one incision on the
inside of the foot below the
ankle. The anterior tibial, the
main tendon that you can feel
on the top of the foot just above
the ankle, is stretched and looped
as though a sling through a small
slot that is cut into the ankle
bone. The technique reinforces
the muscles that ordinarily hold
' up the arch.
In some cases, it was ex
plained, the achilles tendon is
. lengthened by severing it, and
then sewing it together again.

Bergman Film
Seattle, Feb. 15 (U.PJ Roberto
Rossellini's motion picture
"Stromboli" starring Ingrid
Bergman was banned here today
by Acting. Mayor David Levine
who cited It as "ndecenti and lm

The movie, billed locally a:
"a violent explosion of raging
passions," Levine said was "of

tends to corrupt public morals."
He instructed Chief of Police
George D. Eastman to prohibit
showing of the picture anywhere
within the city limits. Levine
acted after more than 436 prot

received within 24 hours, ask

Protest came mainly from
church groups but there was a
liberal sprinkling of private and
business letterheads.

Allied Navies to
Meet Off China
Manila, Feb. 15 (U.R) -The
United States and Britain will
parade their Far Eastern naval
might within 600 miles of com
munist China next month, the
Philippines customs bureau re
ported tonight.
It said the American Western
Pacific fleet and British Far
Eastern fleet will hold joint
maneuvers off the west coast of
Luzon March 3 to 10.
Although U.S. naval head
quarters at Sangley Point, Ma
nila Bay, said it was not ready
to make any announcement, the
report was believed to be true
because the Philippine govern
ment necessarily would have to
be informed of such maneuvers.
Informed sources said they
believed the maneuvers were de
signed to impress Russia and the
Chinese communists with Anglo
American naval strength off
their Pacific shores.
The composition of the Amer
ican fleet was not known here.
But it was speculated that it
would include the newly arrived
aircraft carrier Boxer.
