Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Labor and Farm Groups Plan Joint Action in Politics A move has been launched at Salem Labor temple which hat the purpose ot leading, in the political campaigns ot this year, ; to the endorsement of candidates by organized labor and farm .'S groups. i It started with a preliminary jaDor represeniauves ana two- representatives of the Farmers Union. The latter were A. W. Sheets, organization chairman for the Salem Farmers Union, and Evelyn Saintsbury, state junior leader. The meeting was called by Herbert E. Barker, executive secretary of the Salem Trades and Labor council, and D. Sweringen, executive sec retary of the Salem Building Trades council. A big meeting has been set for February 27 to which will be in vited representatives from labor unions and all farm groups, in cluding the Farmers Union, the Grange, and the Farm Bureau federation. "The intention," said Van Sweringen Thursday, "is that by election time we will be so or ganized that we can go down the line together, and a little later we expect to endorse candidates from top to bottom." He said he believed enough economic and political problems are of mutual concern to the farmers and the labor groups to warrant organization. The move ment will be linked with the Labor League for Political Edu cation and the purpose is to make it state-wide. It will be recom mended by the local organization to the State Federation of Labor. At the February 27 meeting delegates will be named by or ganized labor to attend the farm group meetings and the labor people will ask that the farm groups name delegates to attend labor meetings. Another political rally at an earlier date has been set for February 13 at the Labor temple 443 Center street, but it has no connection with the one set for February 27. Speakers will be present, among whom will be as pirants for office. Farm groups are alsinvlted for this meeting. No Candidates For County Jobs With only 22 "shopping days"! left before the March 10 filing deadline, there has not been a"1 single candidate file for either of the two major Marion county of fices to be voted upon this year. The offices of recorder and" one commissioner will appear on1 the May primary ballot. Terms: of all other major county offices, do not expire in 1950. Incumbent County Recorder Herman William Lanke will al- most positively seek re-election to the position, E. L. Rogers, the commissioner whose term ex-. pires this year, has not yet de-T cided whether or not to file again. Both Lanke and Rogers are republicans. ' It is likely that Lanke will have opposition in the recorder's race. Three men have already voiced an interest in filing for the position, but they all backed out when they discovered the annual salary was $3600, and that the office may be abolished in a few years. A group of World War II vet erans are searching for a quali fied candidate to compete against Lanke. The only other county offices to come up for election this year are the justice of the peace post at Jefferson, where E. E. How ell is now in office, and the of fices of republican and democra tic central committeemen for each precinct. County Clerk Harlan Judd es timates that there are about 24, 000 qualified voters in the coun- T . ty who have not yet registered. . Deadline for registering is April 18.
