MacArthur Is 70 Today; Warns of World War III (Editor's Note: Some of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's beliefs on the atom bomb, communism, and the results of any third world war are set forth in the following dispatch by a United Press correspondent who has covered his headquarters ever since the occupation of Japan began. The general is 70 on Thursday.) By EARNEST HOBERECHT Tokyo, Jan. 26 (U.R) Gen. Douglas MacArthur is convinced that a third world war would destroy civilization as we know it. That conviction and some others held by the Supreme Com mander can be set forth with assurance on his 70th birthday anniversary by this correspondent who has been around his head quarters for four and a half years. Among those convictions are the following 1. Modern war is so destruc tive that It must be outlawed completely. 2. A ban on individual weap ons such as the atomic bomb nd other more fearful forces is not the answer. S. The answer lies In liberty, Christianity, democracy. ' 4. Communism is the biggest threat in the world today, and there Is no mission more im portant than meeting this chal lenge. 5. Civilization as we know it will be destroyed if world lead ers fail in their responsibility to find a solution to the problems and permit a third world war. In contrast with the very de finite ideas he holds on a num ber of important subjects not concerned with his private life, MacArthur came up to his birth day Thursday disinclined to be specific about any plans he might have for the long-range future. He plans to keep right on at his present job until it is finish ed. After that? Rumors are heard that he might take a job in private industry, or that he might retire completely. . Asked about it, he replied good-naturally: "I am no prophet to foretell the future." Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Thursday, January 18, 1950 IS The birthday celebration will not be elaborate. Aside from his work, he will spend his birth day with his wife and their 12-year-old son, Arthur. The general will go to his of fice as usual. The only break in his seven-day-a-week routine were expected visits by a few top members of his staff and a handful of diplomats and others calling to extend greetings. It is his conviction that he has done pretty well here, and that there is hope for Japan's returning to the world family of nations as a remade country following the pattern accepted Foster Named Agent Lebanon Jack G. Foster has been appointed agent for the Prudential Insurance com pany of America, in Lebanon, it is announced by Russell W. Har rison, Mount Hood district man ager in Portland. Prior to his association with Prudential, Foster was in the insurance business in Baltimore. He serv ed seven years with the U. S. army. Mr. and Mrs. Foster and five-month-old daughter are in the process of establishing their residence in Lebanon. On the Job in Tokyo Mac Arthur personifies authority. by the democratic nations. Regardless of how history measures him, the general feels that he first is an American and second- a soldier. He will be pleased if he is remembered. as a good American and a good soldier.
