females, admitted "today" she
home with a good book and not from choice.
She sits home hoping somebody'll call for a date, just lik
any ole wallflower. And plenty

t'ain't so. Golly, but I get lone

'When I take my own car I
don't have to fight my way
home. And if the party degen
erates into a poker or gin-rummy
session I don't have to sit around
and chat with 'the girls.' I take
my car and blow."
But she hasn t yet, Miss Craw
ford said, taken to asking gents
for dates.
"Except 'Butch', of course"
she added. "That's Cesar Romero.
But there's no romance there. I
just call up and say: 'Look,
honey, if you're going to so-and-
so's party, how about a ride?
Miss Crawford won't go out
with just anybody.

Of Half Century Are Picked

Hollywood, Jan. 2 (PI What are the 10 most Important movies
of the half-century?
The first half of the 20th century just about spans the history
of the motion picture. So the question could also read, "What
are the 10 most important movies of all time?"
As an amateur film historian,
I have picked my own 10. They
are based (1) On their influence
on the motion picture industry;
(2) Their popularity with the
public.
Here they are:
1. "The Great Train Robbery"
(1903) was not the first film to
tell a story, but it was the most
successful of the early ones. It
brought thousands of new fans
for the budding industry and
helped effect the transition from
peep-show to the nickelodeon.
2. "The Birth of a Nation"
(1915) is without doubt the most
important film of all time. D.
W. Griffith brought the movies
to maturity with this one great
classic, introducing many new
methods of story-telling.
The picture was controversial
but amazingly popular. Made
for a mere $110,000, it returned
uncounted millions and was the
first film to charge S2 admission.
3. ' The Kid" (1920) repre
sented Charlie Chaplin at his
best. The scren has never seen
such a successful combination of
comedy and drama.
4. "The Jazz Singer" (1927)
makes the list not because it
was a good picture; it would
seem laughable in these sophisti
cated times. But it was the first
picture to use synchronized dia
logue and music. It helped
bring the revolution to talkies.
5. "42nd Street" (1933) es
tablished the musical as a film
commodity. "Broadway Melo
dy" (1929) was the first hit mu
sical, but "42nd Street" really
brought the musical into its
own.
8. "It Happened One Night"
(1934) brought mature comedy
romance to the screen. It made
lasting stars of Clark Gable and
Claudette Colbert and establish

worse if you go with someone
who's just getting a toe-hold in
movies. Then he's using YOUR
glory to get his name in the
gossip columns.
"Nope, you just can't win.
Hollywood's the greatest town
in the world. But it's sure tough
on a bachelor girl."

cause it was the leading money
maker of its time and because
of the delight it gave to millions
of movie-goers.

8. "Stagecoach" (1939) re

western. It brought a renewed
interest in what might be called
the screen's best (at least the
surest) commodity the outdoor
epic.
9. "Gone With the Wind"
(1939) has been seen by more
people than any other picture.
That alone would place it on
this list. But it was also a stir
ring and faithful re-telling of
a great story.
10. "The Best Years of Our
Lives" (1946) was the first real
ly fine film after the trash of the
war years. Dealing realistically
with post war problems, it prov
ed that thoughtful pictures
could be profitable. It spawned
the socially - conscious films of
the present time.
Well, there's my list. Any
body wanna argue?
