Love Did All Right

county last year. The return
from these ewes was nearly a

Actress Sarah Churchill, 34, the
wartime prime minister's second
daughter, was married in Sea
Island, Ga., to tall, dark and
handsome Anthony Beachamp
(pronounced Beecham), Lon
don society photographer who is
a year her junior. It was her
second marriage.
But it was the Veep, Alben
Barkley, who was the nation's
favorite romantic during the fall
months.
With the energy of a young
man, the widowed Kentuckian
commuted between Washington
and St. Louis and finally won
the lady's hand. They were mar
ried with pomp and circum
stance In November with much
of the goings-on televised.
Upon quitting the altar, the
vice-president's bride (formerly
Mrs. Carlton S. Hadley, Jr.) was
heard to observe: "I hate to go
out there and face that mess."
"That's no mess, my dear,"
said the happy bridegroom.
"That's the American people."
The great day for romance
turned out to be Dec. 20.
On that one day, Mayor
O'Dwyer, ailing but happy, mar
ried Miss Sloan Simpson as wide
ly advertised. On the same day,
long-widowed Clarke Gable
caught everybody by surprise
and married Lady Sylvia Stan
ley, widow of Douglas Fair
banks, Sr.
Less than a week later, on
Christmas day, Gary Grant, an
