Traditional Family Events Mark
Christmas Day Throughout City
All week-end social new glvei way
to the many, many family gathering!
marking Christmas the Christmas eve
suppers and tree events this evening,
Christmas morning breakfasts and the
Christmas dinner gatherings Sunday,
and the impromptu entertaining as
friends and relatives drop in to exchange
the greetings of the day.
Welcomed in the capital, too, are
scores of visitors here "to spend the holi
day at home" or with other relatives
and friends.
At McKay Home
Governor and Mrs. Douglas McKay
are entertaining at their Jerris avenue
home tomorrow for a family dinner for
17. In the group will be their son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Hadley and two children, Kileen and
Allan Hadley; their other son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lester D. Green
of Eugene and Mr. Green's father, Les
ter M. Green, also of Eugene; Governor
McKay's mother, Mrs. J. W. Frater, and
Mrs. McKay's sister, Miss Mae Hill, both
of Portland; Mrs. McKay's brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Kelly of Portland, and her nephew and
niece, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Radke, also
of Portland, and another brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Freier
of Oswego and the McKays.
At the Linn C. Smith home for Christ
mas dinner will be Mrs. Smith's son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Jer
man, and their son, Jay Jerman; and
her son-in-law, and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Don Plympton and their four chil
dren, Sally, Tia, Billy and Peggy, all of
Oregon City. The Jermans arrive this
evening and will be here until Monday,
planning to take in the Spinsters club
charity ball tomorrow evening, while
the Plymptons and family will be here
for Christmas day only.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Fry are among
Christmas day hosts for family dinners.

and daughter. Dr. and Mrs. William

Harry B. Johnson, Jr., who is taking
graduate work at University of Oregon;

Mr. and Mrs. James R. Humphrey will
be hosts for a family dinner Christmas
day. In the group will be Mrs. Hum
phrey's mother, Mrs. John W. Scott; her
brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Clarke; Mr. Humphrey's brother
and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George
S. Humphrey of Oswego and their son,

ed with the navy department in Wash

Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Land are among
those entertaining at a holiday family
dinner. In the group will be Mrs. Land's

Miss Lewis, a princess in the 194S
Cherryland Festival, plans her wedding
for next summer.

a Santa Claus booklet that was opened
to reveal the names of the couple.
The bride-to-be is in the state civil
service office. Mr. McElroy is attending
Willamette university, being a senior
this year.

Spinsters Bal
A gala event to wind up Christmas
day will be the annual charity ball of
the Salem Spinsters club tomorrow night
in the No-Name ballroom, the party to
be between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Attending
the affair will be many of the Spinsters
members home from college as well as
visitors in the capital for the holiday
week-end.
Several parties are being arranged
preceding the dance. Mr. and Mrs. John
Steelhammer are among those entertain
ing a group, inviting friends to come at
8 o'clock to their home. Mr. and Mrs.
Rollin A. Haag also have invited a group
before the dance, guests being invited at
9 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Byron Mennis
also are entertaining a group preceding
the dance.
Patrons for the dance are Mr. and Mrs,
Karle Becke, Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Duffy,
Mrs. John S. Beakey, Mr. and Mrs. P.

Beyond its religious significance, first Interest In Christmas always can
ters around the children. During this Yuletide, ai in the past and In-the.
future, in many homes there is the joyous occasion of the baby'l first
Christmas.
And so this Christmas Eve, the Capital Journal society page presents some
of Salem's very junior first citizens facing their very first Christmas.
As always, it Is a problem to decide whose eyes are the brightest these -of
the wide-eyed little ones as they take in the scene of the dazzling tree and.
the gay baubles, or those of parents, grandparents, and fond aunts and uncles
as they watch the proceedings.

dena. The Trelstads will be gone 10
days.

end are Misses Ida Mae and Effie Smith
to spend the holiday at the home of
their niece, Mrs. Richard Kriesel and

Mrs. Walter L. Spaulding Is at Gres
ham for Christmas week-end at the home
of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Clay C. Miller, others in the group
to include Mrs. Spaulding's son-in-law

nison and their two children from Port
land; Mr. Miller's family, Miss Barbara

mas eve in Oregon City with cousins and
will go on to Portland for Sunday and
Monday.
Mrs. Eleanor Clearwater Is spending

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marsh, and on Wed
nesday will leave for San Francisco to
spend the remainder of a two weeks'
vacation,
Nancy Snider, who will celebrate her
12th birthday Monday, was honored at
a caroling and Christmas party for which
her mother, Mrs. Fred M. Snider, enter
tained last evening at their home. An
early dessert was served.

The Kappa Kappa Gamma tea, to b

honors active members of the sorority

and bidden also as guests are two repre
sentatives from other Panhellenic sorori

The new year will be well "danced
In" in Salem, several large dancing par
ties marking the annual merrymaking
occasion.
Subscription Club Party
The annual New Year's dance for the
Subscription club is to be at the Marion
hotel as a dinner dance starting at 9
o'clock.
Decorations in keeping with the com
ing New Year theme will be used.
Tillicum Affair
Tillicum club's New Year's eve dance
is to be at Glenwood ballroom. The so
cial hour will be between 9 and 10
o'clock, dancing starting at 10 o'clock. A
snack bar is to be set up through the
evening and at 1 a.m. will be served the
ham and egg breakfast, a traditional cus
tom with the club. Balloons gay hats
and plenty of horns and noisemakers
are to be on hand to welcome in the
new year.
