Something was responsible for the drop in attendance for outhern California football games this fall and television Is uspected of being the culprit. The czars of the Pacific Coast conference, although they suspect video is responsible for the falling off in cash receipts, apparently have not been able to convince themselves that this is the case. That was one reason for awaiting the NCAA conference deliberations scheduled for January. It may take two or three more years to determine Just what effect video will have on the attitude of the public and the gate receipts. But one thing is certain, if the latest communications contrivance is found to curtail the take-home pay of the various schools, someone will have to make up the difference. It will either be through advertising or a consid erable piece of change from the concern that broadcasts the particular event. Regardless of the final decision on the mat ter, Oregon State has laid the groundwork for video in basket ball by roughing in the preliminary steps in the new Gill pavilion. , A Colossal Affair Although we have no desire to become boresome about it, we feel Oregon State's tremendous basketball plant Is worthy of additional Information. As one of a party of scribes and editors who enjoyed a personally conducted tour of the building with Spec Keene in the role of guide, we 'had ample opportunity to wander through the long corridors, climb the long flights of steps leading to the far upper reaches of the spectators' galleries and peek into dressing and shower rooms as well as the many rooms that will eventually evolve into offices for the athletic department. The task ahead In completing the job is a long one but a construction job of such magnitude is not an overnight engineering assignment. It may be March before the work crews are paid off for the last time. Accommodations Super They don't smell of linament as yet but w presume the dress ing rooms, some of them sufficiently large to accommodate a batallion of men, will get that port has Its dressing rooms one for the home team and an other for the visitors. Looking ahead to the time when a new football stadium will be built to and showers for this sport have trient along the western part of call for a tunnel between the hundred yards or more distant. Ramps which will accom modate six persons abreast one on the south and another on the north (the latter not yet completed) wui empty the pav ilion in rapid order. And there will be little delay in gaining admission either, for, if necessary, 24 ticket selling stations can be opened. Certainly a delightful improvement over the queue system that prevailed during the regime of the old men's gym. Cold Statistics For those who like to revel in statistics: The pavilion is the second largest suspended arch structure of Its type In the V. t. The largest Is in Indianapolis. The highest part of the roof is 83 feet above the floor; 1000 tons of struc tural steel, 14,000 cubic yards of concrete and more than 100,000 pumice blocks in the building. The roof is insul ated with $41,000 worth of acoustical tile (no echoes in the structure). Illumination for the playing floor consist of 48 1500-watt lamps, providing more than 90 watts for each square foot of playing surface. Each light can be Individually controlled as to height from the floor. Air conditioning system will keep the temperature at 65 de grees. Six thermostatically controlled heating units will displace 120,000 cubic feet of air per minute. The heat . control system also will blow in fresh, cold air In the second halt of its dual faction. competition. AFTER 70 YEARS National Loop Sets New Records New York, Dec. 20 VP) You'd think that after doing; business for more than 70 years, the Na tional league would have fin ished breaking records In whole sale lots. But just take a look at the senior loop's miscellaneous marks for the past season. Three major league records were bro ken, and four others tied, ac cording to official records re leased today. Eight National league stand ards were smashed and a half dozen tied. Ralph Kiner, Pittsburgh's man with the big bat, was the individual atandout. He did something- the old sultan of swat, Babe Ruth, couldn't ac complish by leading his league In home runs for the fourth consecutive season. In two of those years, 1947 and 1948, he tied with Johnny Mize of the New York Giants. The other two major league marks cracked were 936 home runs for the league as a whole and only 17 bases stolen by the St. Louis Cardinals. That was one in reverse. Kiner, who poled 54 home runs during the 1949 campaign, also broke two of his own league records and tied another. It was the first time anyone hit 50 or more homers on two occasions. He hit 51 in 1947. He also punch- out 16 round-trippers in one month for the first time in his tory in the circuit. Stan (The Man) Muslal and Red Schoendienst of the St. Louis Cardinals, each broke a pair of records. Musial paced the league in base hits for the fifth year and in triples for his fourth season to set new marks. Schoendienst's records were in the fielding department. He had the longest errorless streak for a second-baseman, accepting 285 chances without a miscue Ways The end of busy day ,7 dinner snd aa evening with good companions , . light Olympia as your beverage of moderation. Watson combined six field goals with a free throw for 13 points. This was tied by Jack Detour. His seven free throw points were added to three field goals. A six-foot sophomore, Jack McMahon, broke the heart of the two-platoon Cougars at New York and split the game wide open in the second half.
