Salem Navy Plane Assists In Hunt for Ruth Aberle One of the planes for the Salem Naval Air Facility Wednesday morning for about an hour joined the seach for Ruth Aberle, 16-year-old girl last near Kelso, Wash. The plane a twin-Beach piloted by Lt. Stanley Fallander, exe itive officer at the facility left Salem at 9:45 a. m. and returned here ai n:o a.m. During the time it was over the area in which the girl has been lost since wandering away from her group Sunday it flew swaths over the entire area, going as low as the trees as ter rain would permit, sometimes1 just above the tree tops. With Fallander in the plane and serving as observer were Chief George Smith, AD 1 Phil Yoder. AD1 Charles Holman and AM2 Ken Taylor, all from the Salem facility. On returning the pilot of the plane noted that the search at the time seemed to be north, northeast and northwest of where the headquarters had been established. To the north the men spotted several little roads that would eventually lead out of the wooded area and open spots. Also noted were a few small shacks or buildings. To the east of the headquar ters the terrain gradually rises and then goes to a 2250 peak. By thus going into this area a per son could get onto high enough ground to get his bearings the men reported. To the southeast of headquarters, however, there is a very heavily wooded area, on a gradual slope. Northwest of the headquarters the land goes down into a valley as it also does on moving north. After returning to Salem Lt. Fallander reported the observa tions of himself and the men with him to the Washington state police through the wires of the Oregon state police headquarters. The harpoon gun for catching whale was invented about 1860. Father Breaks Daughter's Arm St. Louis, Dec. 15 U.R An unemployed father admitted breaking his three-year-old daughter's arm while trying to make her stop singing Christ mas carols, police said today. Jack Payne, 31, told authori ties the girl, Rebecca Ann, kept on singing in her bed after he ordered her to "shut up and go to sleep." Police quoted the father as saying he grabbed the youngster by her forearm, jerked her out of bed and spanked her. He termed the injury to her arm "an accident." Mrs. Payne said her husband was excitable and worried be cause he was "unable to do any thing for the kids we've got five for Christmas." She denied that he was drunk at the time, but a City hospital physician said he was suffering from acute alcoholism. Payne, who came here 10 days ago from Milan, Tenn., to 'look for work, was booked on char ges of assault and mistreatment of a child.
