Glows With Star of Bethlehem
Bethlehem, Pa., Dec. 1 (m The "Christmas city of the U.S.A."
glowed Saturday night with the famed Star of Bethlehem this
steel city's symbol of peace, good will toward all men.
The 81-foot high electric star throws its light 28 miles against
the backdrop of stubby South mountain and the red-orange flames
from steel blast furnaces. ;
The gigantic star remains
lighted until Jan. 2, a beacon to
thousands of visitors. Last year
thousands came from all over
the United States to see tht star.
Bethlehem got its name on
Christmas eve, 1741, in a cere
mony conducted by Count Zin
zendorf, one of the town's foun
ders. He held a lighted beeswax
candle during the ceremony, al-

And with the star and its 3000
bulbs shining brightly, a myriad
of other lights were switched on
at the same time, turning indus
trial Bethlehem into a 'great
bright way.'
A 60-foot Christmas tree com
posed of 60 individual, tiny
spruces, Is mounted on the mid
dle arch of the hill-to-hill bridge
that connects .this eastern Penn
sylva n i a community's north,
south and east sections. The span
crosses the Lehigh river, a ca
nal and three railroads. The
tree contains 1200 red, green
and white bulbs.
Some . 40,000 electric stars,
bells, candles and wreaths are.
strung along seven miles of the
city's streets, in both business
and residential neighborhoods.
The first recorded candle ser
vice was held in 1756 when 250
candles were lighted on Christ
mas eve by the town's 741 resi
dents. Bethlehem now has 60,-
000 residents.
The candles are made in the
old Moravian tradition. The art
was handed down to Simon
Rau who passed on the secret to
present owners of the drug
store that bears his name. The
store, incidentally is one of the
nation's oldest apothecaries.
Bimbo, Baboon
Has High Time
Paris, Tenn., Dec. 7 U,R
Bimbo the baboon had his mas
ter to thank today for saving
him from police court charges
of petty larceny, disorderly con
duct, terrorizing the neighbor
hood and resisting arrest.
Service Station Operator Bai
ley Robbins picked up his pet at
police headquarters yesterday
after two patrolmen subdued
and Jailed the beast following a
big spree.
Bimbo so nicknamed by po
lice who didn't know his real
name got loose yesterday and:
1. Stole a bag of clothes pins.
2. Scared the inhabitants of a
new reside n t i a 1 section by
prowling on their front porches.
3. Battled two patrolmen who
tried to capture him.
4. Tore a leg off Patrolman
Herman Roberson's trousers.
But Roberson and Patrolman
Don Gaskill finally trapped
Bimbo and took him to jail,
then sent out a call for his owner.
By the time Robbins showed
up to claim him, Bimbo was
thoroughly subdued and Police
Chief Walter Smith figured he
had suffered enough humiliation.
The baboon's pride was dealt
a final blow when officers lock
ed him up in a cell in the wo
men's quarters of the jail.
