L. Stanley farm near Stayton. NOW ON FARM NEAR STAYTON Number of Autos Amazes Student Farmer of Denmark By DOUGLAS THOMAS "There are so many cars here!" And that thought continues to amaze Hans Banke a 22-year- old Danish farm youth who became the first known exchange student farmer to come to the Banke arrived In the United and was first assigned to a farmf in North Dakota. After spending a three-month working visit to C. L. Stanley farm In the North Santiam area near Stayton, he expected to look over other farming areas of the nation. The exchange Idea which has sent sons of American farmers to Europe and brought many nationalities to this country haB been sponsored in the United States by the Farmers Union for goodwill and the valuable inter change of agricultural ideas. But the number of automo biles in the United States still remains the first subject Banke thinks of when comparing his homeland to the United States. "In Denmark, nearly every body has a bicycle maybe two. There are so many bicycles, it is hard to drive a car there. But I never imagined there could be so many cars here," he explains. States during the early summer. died English in college In his na tive land, and still remains con fused by American slang ... On the subject of politics in Denmark, Banke pointed out there were few communists in the little Baltic country al though American - Russian friendship during wartime had lulled many into a sympathetic feeling for the Reds. "We make fun of them now," Banke explained, telling that post-war experiences had turn ed the people of his nation to the west, The young Dane, far more fa miliar with farming problems, said mat his father raised aspar agus, gram and sugar beets. He took a critical view of green American asparagus and told how the crop was bleached dur ing the growing process in Den mark. "It tastes better the green tastes like grass," he asserted. Proof that the exchange farm ing idea can bring usable ideas to this country came when Banke related that sugar beeti tops are not discarded in Den-1 mark. Instead, they are chopped and used for ensilage. He was impressed with the widespread use of machinery on American farms, but quick to point out that his country had been unable to purchase farm machinery for the better Dart of a decade. A machine designed to Dick two rows of potatoes at a time had won his praise In view of trie fact that Slntfle-row plowing is siyie used In Dcnmnrk. He emphasized, too, that fnrm buildinss are more permanent In Europe than in this country. un his father s farm, bnrns are built of steel and stone. Farm machinery can be rolled onto the concrete second story noor, and In the event of fire. the only losses would be the roof and the contents, the build ing would stand, Jie claimed. Yet, on a comparison of llv- InR standards of the two nations. Danke said there wore fewer household utilities such as refri gerators and that clothing and food were more expensive in Denmark which boasts the high est living standard in Kurope. He said it was possible to live nn 40 cents a day if American money were used in Denmark. While at the Stanley farm. Banke will study Barden-tvne agriculture and learn how the produce is marketed to shops in the Salem area. He was assigned to the estab lishment near Stayton on appli cation by the Stanleys to the Farmers Union. For his work there, he will be paid regular wages and live as a member of the family including the priv ilege of driving a car. n WALNUT MEATS WANTED WE NEED 10,000 POUNDS AT ONCE Top Cash Prices Paid ORCUTT'S MARKET 4200 No. Thursday, Nov. 17, 191923 Portlanders Greet Friends from Valley Woof Ctavl.n Tr onH rm Glenn McClellan of North San- tiam and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mc Clellan attended a housewarm ing at their sister,, Mrs. Hubert Hansen, In Portland.
