OREGON STATE
COLLEGE
Campus Clippings
By MARILYN HILL
Hoping for a quiet rest after the Homecoming festivities,
Staters found last week-end to be no refuge for the tired. One
of the few week-ends of the term without some all-school event
scheduled, both Friday and Saturday niKht were filled to the
brim with dances.
Among the more prominent
dances was the Sigma Chi
Sweetheart ball where Joyce
Vanderoool was selected as
1949-50 sweetheart. At the for
esters' ball another queen was
chosen. Ann Carter reigned as
"Paul Bunyan's Pin-Up" under
an outdoor setting. The Me
morial Union decorations featur
ed a large yellow moon sur
rounding models of a boy and
girl in formal clothes. Fir
boughs, vari-colored leaves and
caricatures of personalities in
Paul Bunyan's time decorated
the rest of the ballroom.
Many house dances were also
on the program Saturday night.
Sorority pledge dances were
given by Delta Delta Delta,
Gamma Phi Beta, and Pi Beta
Phi. The Phi Gamma Delta
fraternity held its annual pa
Jama dance. The Theta Chi
fraternity was transformed both
externally and internally into a
product of the old west for their
"Red Ox Stampede," using hun
dreds of burlap sacks and bales
of hay for the main portion of
decorations.
"A Buck Well Spent" is the
cry of "Mr. Red Feather" as he
urges all students to contribute
to the Campus Chest drive this
week. Three living organiza
tions with the highest percent
age of donations will.be award
ed "human prizes" in the form
of Mary I. Bash, dean of wo
men; Dan W. Poling, dean of
men; Clifford Maser, dean of
business; George W. Glee.son,
dean of engineering, and Kip
Taylor, football coach. The win
ning houses will chose the fac
ulty member 'hey would like to
have assist with house duties
during next week.
All of the sorority pledges
this year were honored Monday
night when a special banquet
was held in the Memorial union.
Under the auspices of senior
Panhellenic, composed of all
sorority house presidents, the
banquet was planned by the
pledges themselves who are or
ganized in a junior Panhellenic,
composed of the presidents of
pledge classes. Dr. G. Herbert
Smith, president of Willam
ette university, spoke to the
group. Shirlee Newbry and
Barbara Spagle are members of
junior Panhellenic.
I'm nappa rni, national scno-i
lastic honorary, paid honor to
nearly 200 sophomores and'
juniors for scholastic achieve
ment by presenting them with'
engraved honor certificates.
Barbara Ann Smith received
special recognition for a grade
point average of above 3 5 for
six terms. Others receiving
awards were Peggy Burroughs,
Marilyn Hill, Dan McCall and
Janet Lindley. Janet was also!
tapped for Alpha Lambda Delta, ;
