Townsend Plan
Urged to Meel
Hope for Ihe future of the
Townsend pension plan was ex
pressed by Mrs. J. A. Ford, na
tional director of the Townsend
legislative bureau at Washington,
D C. in a talk here in Monday
niEht. I
Real necessity is for a system
on a nationwide basis and not
subject to the whims of local
boards and applicable to all el
derly persons and not just a priv
ileged f ew, she declnred.
Mrs. Ford expressed the hope
that the pending Townsend bill
could be forced from the ways
and means committee at the next
session of congress so that it
could be sent to the senate fin
ance committee for further act
ion.
'More and more businessmen
are realizing the need for a na
tional pension program and
many of them know they would
be unable to carry on such a
program of their own and that
state systems do not always ac
complish the Intended purpose,"
Mrs. Ford declared.
The current Townsend pro-
program constitutes a proposed
amendment to the social securi
ty program, broadening the ben
efits and reducing the applica
ble age limit from 65 to 60 years.
$4 Million Ship to
Be Sold to High Bidder
Portland, Nov. 8 (D The
high-priced but long Idle can
nery ship, the Pacific Explorer,
will go up for sale next month.
The maritime commission will
open bids on the vessel in Wash
ington, D. C, Dec. 8.
The 410-foot ship, formerly
the Normacrey, was converted to
fishing by the Reconstruction
Finance Corporation in 1946 at
a cost of $4,000,000. It quickly
became the center of a contro
versy. Assigned to the Pacific Ex
ploration company, owned by
Nick Bez, the northwest's larg
est fishing operator,' the ship
sailed in 1947 for Central Amer
ica, ostensibly for fisheries tfx
ploration. California tuna fishers pro
tested it was taking fish com
mercially instead of doing re
search. Miss Ackerman
Visiting Red Cross
Miss Edith Ackerman, Junior
Rod Cross consultant, arrived
here Tuesday morning for a
three-day visit with local Red
Cross officials.
Miss Ackerman will spend
Tuesday and Wednesday con
sulting with Mrs. Mark Astrup,
local Junior Red Cross chair
man, and others in the local
office.
On Thursday, Miss Acker
man will preside at a conference
called for chairmen of Junior
Red Cross in Linn, Benton,
Clackamas, Polk, Lincoln and
Marion counties, the event to
be in the Salem YMCA. The
chairmen from the different
counties will go over the com
ing year s activities among the
Junior Red Cross units.

Oregon '0'" Blasted
On Skinners' Butte
Eugene, Nov. 8 (IPi The Ore
gon "O has been practically
blasted from its legendary place
atop Skinners' Butte, but it will
soon be completely restored. Art
Johnson, University of Oregon
student body president, said that
plans have not been formed as
yet for restoration of the con
crete school letter, since the
damage was not extensive. How
ever, he promised that the "O"
will be "better than ever."
Police patrols made a three-
hour search of the northern por
tion of the city early Sunday
following a 5 a. m. explosion
that awakened the residents
throughout the city. A section
of the lower right corner of the
"O" had been demolished by
dynamite, leaving a gap about
four feet long in the 25-foot high
letter.
The only clue that might in
dicate those responsible for the
vandalism was a new layer of
wet paint on portions of the
"O." The paint, the police re
ported, is an orange color, and
so applied that it forms an
"OSC" legend.
