Harvey Elser's Fat Lamb
Bought by Mallory Hotel

Harvey Elser of Turner sold hi grand champion 4-H fat lamb
for $1.45 per pound to the Mallory hotel of Portland In yester
day'! fat stock auction it the Pacific International Livestock
exposition. It weighed B3 pounds and brought $134.83.
The champion FFA lamb fed by Keith McDaniels, Wallowa
brought $S per pound. It was
donated to the St. Mary's Or
phan Home, Beaverton, by the
buyer, Zenner's Market, Port
land. Swift and company bought
the open class champion fat
Jamb fed by University of Idaho
at $1.35 per pound.
Swift and company paid 85
cents per pound for the grand
champion steer of the show, a
Hereford exhibited in the open
classes by Archie Parks, Great
Falls, Mont. The 4-H champ
fed by Doug Bennett, Grays Har
bor, Wash., went to the Mallory
Hotel at 82 cents and Dave Guet
tinger, Colton, Wash., FFA lad
sold his champion for 56 cents
Veterans at the U.S. hospital
in Portland will receive the
grand champion 4-H fat barrow
purchased by Del Monte Meat
company, Portland, for $1.20 per
pound from Gary Holmes, Tan
gent. The Shrine hospital, Port
land, was presented with the
grand champion FFA fat barrow
purchased by Pacific Meat com
pany, Portland. It brought $1.10
per pound and was exhibited by
Dave Guettinger. University of
Idaho's grand champion open
class fat barrow brought a bid
of 80 cents from Swift and company.
Sale total for 4-H and FFA
youngsters only was $108,342 49
Steers averaged 32.1 cents per
pound, lambs 48.6 cents and
hogs 26 6 cents. The 306 steers
and 91 lambs averaged about 10
percent less than last year and
183 hogs averaged 26 percent
under the 1949 figure.

Senate Group Clears
Atomic Commission
Washington, Oct. 13 MV-The
Senate-House atomic committee
today approved, 9 to 6, a re
port clearing the atomic energy
commission of "incredible mis
management" charges.
The charges were made by
Senator Hickenlooper R., Iowa)
last summer against Chairman
David E. Lilienthal and other
members of the commission.
The committee held lengthy
hearings during the summer.
. The vote approved a report
drafted by those who felt the
hearings proved there was no
sound basis for the charges.
Vegetable Price
Expected to Rise
Washington. Oct. 13 MR) Be
cause of short crops, prices of
many fresh vegetables probably
will be higher this fall than last
year, the Agriculture Depart
ment said today.
It added, however, that most
of the makings of a holiday feast
apples, turkeys and cranber
ries will be plentiful. There
will be lots of nuts, pears, rais
ins and prunes, too.
As for vegetables, the depart
ment's preliminary forecast in
dicated that fall output of 11
truck crops would drop 20 per
cent short of last year's output
As a result, the department
said, growers can expect to get
higher prices than last year for
lettuce, onions, celery, carrots,
lima beans, cucumbers, green
peas, spinach and cabbage. To
mato prices also may stay high
er than last fall.
CROP Program

Marlun county Is among 18
Oregon counties that will parti
cipate in the Christian Rural
Overseas Program (CROP) to
feed the starving people of Eu
rope and Asia, joe King, direc
tor of the Oregon CROP pro
gram, has announced.
King said a chairman for Mar
ion county will be named soon.
The aim of the Oregon CROP
program is to send between 12
and 14 carloads of wheat, dried
milk, dried fruits, cheese and
other bulk products to the hun
gry people of war-infested lands
as a gift from the rural people
of Oregon.
The CROP program is jointly
sponsored by the Christian
World Service, Catholic Rural
Life and Lutheran World Re
lief, marking the first joint
church program of its kind in
the history of the United States,
King said.
King is administrative offi
cer of the farmers home admin
istration, with headquarters in
Portland.
Solicitors will make a farm-to-farm
canvass of the 18 coun
ties during the week of Novem
ber 6 to 13, and Thanksgiving
day has been set as the day for
shipment of all cropt collected
for the program, King stated.
Receiving depots for the com
modities contributed will be an
nounced later, he said.
In addition to Marion county,
participating counties include
Benton, Lane, Morrow, Umatil
la, Gilliam, Sherman, Wasco,
Clatsop, Union, Jefferson,
Clackamas, Washington, Yam
hill, Polk, Linn Tillamook and
Multnomah.

Washington, Oct. 13 (IP) The
Interior Department today re
ceived the most money $584,
098,797 ever given to it for a
single year's operation.
President Truman signed a bill
appropriating funds to the de
partment for the fiscal year
which began last July 1.
For the past three months, the
department has been operating
with allowances provided under
special congressional resolutions.
The biggest slice of Interior
appropriations, $354,014,510,
goes to the reclamation bureau.

a half dozen major projects.

Ariz.-Nev., $36,504,860; Central
Valley project, Calif., $60,789,
890; Colorado-Big Thompson,
