Chapter 31)
Haw It happened, Hie never fully
knew, but all at oner, ihe wan Jerk
ad back to reality. Hatd waa stand
ing In the doorway, fun In hand I
With a snarl, Dr. Bayles made a
lunae for her the final dlspalrlnt
lunee of a trapped animal. Then
Hald raught him and apun him
around. When he had finished, the
doctor had aubtlded In a senseless
heap on the floor.
Tha bewildering succession of
eventa waa almoat too much for
Derrla. Rhe caiwht hold of a chair
and sat down. It waa aeveral second
before the room Hopped whirling
around her.
Hald left tha doctor and came
over lo her.
"We'll wait until he cornea to;
then the district attorney will want
to see him. Mind telling me how he
talked you Into coming here to
night?" "He didn't." Derrla answered In
aurpri.se. "I happened to run into
him when I left my office. But how
did you know that I waa here?"
"Holwny told me tonight, before
he died."
"Holway deari?"Derria exclaimed.
"Yes. You see. Holway was the
ostensible head of the gang. Bayles
kept well in the background. I'm
convinced that only Holway knew
of Bayles true identity."
"Will you tell me just where you
fit into all of thia?" Derrla asked.
"You're certainly entitled to an
explanation. After all, I brought you
into It." He smiled at her. "Had I
known then you'd be ao peralalent.
I never would have." He panned for
a moment. "It waa the counter
feiting and kidnapplna anglea thai
first interested me. Another agent
had atarted on a trail that aeemed
to lead to Holway. Unfortunately
he waa killed before we got any
thing definite. I picked up the trail
from there. We invent Iga ted Holway
from every angle, learned about the
house on Lilac Street, but did not
Immediately aunpect Baylea."
Derrla listened Intently as he con
tinued. "Then the nlRht at vour house
Bayles showed hia hand. After you
had gone to bed, he took your car
and drove ma to Ed Kleeber'a. One
of Kleeber'a men drove me to Lilac
Street. Apparently Baylea arranged
to get back to your house, but had
them take your car out In the
country a way to make It look aa If
I had used it to get away in. Bv
using your car, he avoided the
danger of your looking out and not
seeing hia own parked In the drive
Aa far aa he knew. I waa a friend
of Holway's. therefore O.K. He got
me away because he feared you
micht get too curious."
There a one thing that bother me
Hnid. Who killed Cherry?"
Bayles engineered that, and tried
to make certain Holway wouldn't
find out. Lieutenant Fletcher, whom
you've met. managed to piece to
gether some of the story, and I got
the rest. Years ago, back In Bt
Louis, while cherry was In the
chorus of a burlesque show, a girl
who waa the atar died aa the result
of an Illegal operation. Cherry waa
indirectly Involved, but the doctor
who waa responsible disappeared
and thev never caught up with him
We are positive now that the
doctor was Baylea. Cherry knew
who he was, but never told anvone.
for reasons best known lo herself.
She left St. Louis shortly afterwards
and married Holway. Somewhere
along the line, Baylea came Into
the picture. Cherry recognized him.
but was willing to leave well enough
alone. She wasn't concerned with
what had happened in the past."
"How did you find that out?"
Dcrria interrupted.
Hald answered grlmlv. "All this
time Cherry didn't know about Hol
way's real activities. Suddenly he
found out that Baylea had some
aort of control over her husband
and knowing Bayles. she didn't like
tha look of things. She must have

Derrla waa allent when Hald fin
ished. "I've been an awful fool," ahe
said finally. "When I think how
smart I felt In getting away from
the Jason' "
Hald laughed. "Stanley must have
overdone It a bit. We told him that
It might be a good Idea Just to
scare you. He did too good a Job "
In the downstairs hall a man
moved quietly out of the shadows.
"I see you didn't have any
trouble." he addressed Hald. Then,
catching sight of Derrla, he greet
ed her. "Good evening. Miss Martin.
You certainly do get around."
"Not looking after the laundry to
night?" she countered.
He laughed. "No. my Job waa to
keep an eye on Baylea. I hardly ex
pected you to be with him, though,
t hung around for a while and then
began to get worried. I waa think
ing I'd better atart up when Hald
arrived. What'U we do with him?"
He Indicated the doctor.
"You'd better take him to the
D A s office. There'll be a lot of
things they'll be wanting to ask
'lim "
Then Hald fololwed him down
the steps. At the bottom he turned
to look back. Derrla had not mov
ed. At last ahe became aware of his
scrutiny. As their eyes met he
smiled. All trace of hardness had
vanished from his face.
"Going my way?" he asked.
For an inappreciable instant ahe
hesitated. Then with an answer
