Portland Wool
Auction Fizzles
Portland, Ore., Sept. 21 UP)
The Western Wool Handlers as
sociation wool sale collapsed to
day as buyers, fearful of the
pound devaluation effect on 1
prices, cut their offers or with-i
held them.
Only two lots in the morn
ing's two-million-pound offering!
received bids and owners re-
fused to sell at the prices quot
ed.
Bids were scaled and prices
were not made public, but Roy
Ward, general manager of the
large Pacific Wool Growers, a
co operative, said he understood
they were 15 to 20 percent down
from prices paid Sept. 16 at the
association's Billings, Mont., auc
tion. Pacific wool growers has two
million pounds up for sale this
afternoon but Ward said he ex
pected no acceptable offers.
'The domestic wool market Is
temporarily on the blink," he
said. "I think buyers are over-
pessimistic. I have talked with
the secretary of commerce
(Charles Sawyer, in Portland
today) and he too thinks the
devaluation effect will be less
than many people fear. This si
tuation isn't as black as it's
painted."
Today's was the third sealed

shown here today. The next sale
is scheduled Monday at San

Biackmer Returns
From 27 Years Exile
Boston, Sept. 21 (P) Henry
M. Biackmer, 80, Colorado mil
lionaire who fled this country 27
years ago to escape testifying in
the Teapot Dome scandal, arriv
ed here today by plane from
France, immigration officials re
ported. Withotu the fanfare that mark
ed his flight from this country,
Biackmer stepped off an Air
France plane as just another pas
senger. Oliver Remington, assistant U.
S. commissioner of immigration,
revealed Blackmer's identity at
the airport.
Biackmer, after gaining great
wealth in Colorado mining and
western oil ventures, chose self-
imposed exile in France rather
than testify in the senate lnves
tigations and federal court trials
growing out of the oil scandals
of the Harding administration.
Subsequently, Biackmer paid
$60,000 in fines for contempt of
court and $3,670,784 for back in
come taxes.
