Death late Friday night claim
ed one of Oregon's oldest native
sons, Martin Luther Morris, a
descendent of Robert Morris,
one of those signing the Declara
tion of Independence.
Morris, a resident of Salem
for the past 12 years, died at
the home of his daughter, Mrs.
Howard Allender, with whom
he had resided at 2395 North
Fourth street.
Born in a log cabin near Yam
hill, Oregon, September 3, 1853,
Morris was the son of pioneers
who came across the plains to
Oregon by ox team in 1851 and
settled near Yamhill. His mo
ther, Susan Good Morris, was the
first while girl born in Missouri
and his father came from Penn
sylvania, Morris' wife, the for
mer Emma Daniels, died in

18 Months Prison
For Stealing Auto
Jack Henry Dykes, true name
Roland F. Griswold, drew an 18
months sentence in the peniten
tiary for larceny of a car from
Emerson U. Teague from Circuit
Judge George Duncan Saturday.
His record showed former brush
es with the law, including a fed
eral sentence under the Dyer act
in Colorado, larceny and AWOL
In Iowa as well as minor offen
ses. The matter of an arson
charge in Michigan which had
been credited to him at a pre
vious appearance in court here
was cleared up. it being shown
such charge attached to him was
an error and that evidently he
was mixed up with someone
else as he told the court at the
time.
Bartley Cornelia who passed
a $17.35 check on Les Newman
when there were no funds in
the-bank to cover received a
six months jail sentence for ob
taining property by false pre
tenses, with three years proba
tion, to make good what checks
are out and obey all laws. He
has no past record.
Richard Lyle Jensen charged
with larceny of a wrist watch
and $9.50 from C. C. Howell,
Jr., also was given to September
6 for sentence.
Dry mustard and celery salt,
as well as salt and freshly
ground pepper, are excellent
seasonings for stuffed eggs.
After mashing the yolks with
these seasonings moisten with a
little mayonnaise. These eggs
are good served with salad
greens and sliced tomato, as a
first course.
