A yard of 39-inch to 42-inch mclcrial with no up or down design can make a blouse with short raglan sleeves or short set in sleeves in sizes 10 to 20, says the department of agriculture. U. S. fo Purchase! Barllett Pears Washington. Aug. 13 M" Pear growers had the promise of Secretary of Agriculture Bran nan today that the department will continue buying surplus Bartlelt pears. A California fruit industry committee. accompanied by Senator Downey (D., Calif.) and 10 California house members, called on the secretary yester day to urge continues purchases of fresh pears for the next month. The department already has announced purchase of 300 car loads of Bartlett pears for use in the school lunch program. The California committee re quested additional purchases of 200 carloads next week and ISO cars a week for the three suc ceeding weeks. "The secretary told us: 'We're in the market, and we re going to stay in the market,'" Rep. An derson (R., Calif.) told a re porter. Anderson said Brannan made no comment, however, as to the quantity to be purchased, or at what price. Previous purchases have been at $2.15 per 46-pound box, or about 30 percent of parity. The industry group also ask ed government purchase of 1, 000,000 cases of canned Bartlelt pears, all from the record 1940 crop. With export markets virtually closed and a large carryover of last year's pack, California can ners are paying $20 to $40 a ton for Bartlett pears this year, com pared with $100 to $120 a ton last year. Growers estimated pro duction costs at $50 a ton. Selling Forces Grains fo Drop Chicago, Aug. 13 (Pi Selling Irom commission houses and lo cal traders pushed grain prices lower on the board of trade. Losses ran to around 2 cents in corn at times and dealings, slow at the start, picked up speed as prices slid late in the ses sion. Cash corn prices again work ed lower as 120 cars of the grain arrived here today. Sales of No. 1 yellow corn were made at a premium of 6Vi cents over the September delivery. At the start of August the premium on this grade was 12 'A to 12:!i centy over September. News dispatches stating low er prices for grains would result from a revised parity formula, as proposed in a new senate farm bill, caused some, of the liquida tion. Traders also were concern ed over the storage problem for both wheat and corn later in the year. , Wheat closed Hi to 2 cents lower, September $2.00 -'4, corn was 2 to 3 cents lower, Sep tember $1.19Vi-$1.19, oats, were 'i-llower, September eSU-'is rye was it-l'i lower, Septem ber $1 .47 , soybeans were 34 l'i lower, September $2.35 and lard was 8 to 18 cents a hundred pounds lower, Septem ber $12.27. (Acme Tele-photo) Hiss Mitchell Now Conscious Atlanta, Aug. 13 A hos-j pita! bulletin today noted that Margaret Mitchell, who wrote of lost cause in "Gone With the Wind," was showing signs of winning her own. During the night, the hospital reported, Miss Mitchell aroused momentarily from the semi-coma into which she lapsed after being struck by a speeding car Thursday night. She was able to ask for and drink a glass of water and ob serve that she "hurt all over," before relapsing into unconsci ousness. Meanwhile, a nation hearten ed by her tale of great courage was sending along its wishes for speedy recovery. Like hund reds of others who found the iron gallantry of that Civil war romance to their liking, Presi dent Truman wired, "hope you are better soon." Baker, Turner, have made an offer to Marion county through its court to sell the county 25 or 30 acres of land on the Battle Creek road opposite the county's present quarry property southeast of Sa lem as a combination rock quar ry and garbage disposal plant for $10,000. The court had indicated it is not interested in the offer for quarry purposes at the price quoted, which is considered too high. As to the use for a garbage disposal plant this was consider ed doubtful as being probably too close to the highway and al so too close to Salem. Judge Murphy said its use as a gar bage disposal plant would prob ably conflict with regulations of the state board of health, even if the proximity to Salem did not stand in the way. Amity Additons to the agri culture study hall are built-in file cnoincts for bulletin files. An innovation for the work shop this year will be the mount ing of machinery on tool boards so that equipment may be moved to different parts of the build ing. OBITUARY Mrs. Myrtle W.
