Seeks Return of
Her Missing Cat
Several cats much valued as
pets by their owners, have dis
appeared in recent weeks from a
district along North 20th street.
The latest to disappear is
"Bobbie, a year-old tiger and
white cat belonging to Mrs.
Ethel Freck, 1620 North 20th.
He was last seen Thursday
night, August 4.
Bobby was a constant com
panion to his mistress, who is
not well, and misses him very
much. If anyone should know
his whereabouts Mrs. Freck
would appreciate a telephone
call to 2-3975, and offers a re

Nut Growers
Get Hearing
Filbert growers of the Pacific
Northwest, faced with a record
crop this year, have asked for
and have been granted a hear
ing by U. S. Department of Agri
culture officials in an attempt
to establish a marketing agree
ment effective October 1st.
August 15th, 16th and 17th
have been set as dates for the
hearing, in the auditorium of the
New Journal Building, 800 S. W
Front St., Portland. It will con
vene each day at 9:30 a. m. (Day
light Time),
. Proposed by Northwest Nut
Growers, Dundee, marketing
agent for seven cooperative as
sociations in Oregon and Wash
ington, and endorsed by other
packers in the filbert industry
the agreement recommends that
a Control Board be established
to function as authority in de
termining percentages of mer
chantable grade in-shell filbert
tonnage that would be marketed
as such in each crop year. Wal
nut growers have marketed
under a similar program for
many years. Maintenance of con
trol on the in-shell tonnage of
fered to market in relation to
the yearly demand, is reported
as a large factor in maintaining
a healthy, progressive walnut
industry.
Under the proposed filbert
agreement, surplus tonnage of
the merchantable grade in-shell
filberts would be diverted to
marketing as shelled filbert ker
nels, export sales, or other mar
ket diversion. Tonnage going
into these channels would be op
tional to the handler, but the
total, diverted into one or all.
would equal his surplus percent
age reported to the Control
Board.

Pocket Radios
"We'll wait until we can get
wrist radios," Police Chief Clyde
A. Warren scoffed Wednesday
when advised that Portland
patrolmen are to be equipped
with pocket sized radio receiv
ers.
And a check with the city's
chief radio operator, Don Pou
jade, confirmed the chief's skep
tical view of the Portland plan
as disclosed there by Mayor
uorothy McCullough Lee.
The Portland police radio net
work is an AM system, while the
balem equipment has been con
verted to FM., Pocket receivers
are available for AM hookups,
but FM requires too much equip
ment to condense the receivers
into pocket editions.
With the Portland mayor's dis
closure that the new equipment
would be added for patrolmen,
announcement was also made
that the federal communications
commission had approved a
point-to-point radio system for
the Willamette valley.
The first link with Portland
on that network will be Salem.
Radio equipment has been order
ed for the new system in Salem
which eventually will expand
into a state-wide network,
