    'Kiddieland' to
Be Fair Feature
Work will be completed this
week on the Oregon State Fair's
"Kiddieland," the last major
construction at the exposition
plant before the fair opens Sept.
5.
A large area adjacent to the
horseshow pavilion has been
set aside as a juvenile area and
a number of amusement inno
vations already have been in
stalled. The entrances and ticket
booths will be painted with nurs
ery rhyme characters and the
entire, area will be surrounded
by a picket fence.
The toy train, long a fair
standby for the younger gentry,
as been rerouted and will in
clude a tunnel and trestle. Large
awning-covered benches will be
scattered throughout "Kiddie
land" for weary parents. All
amusement rides within "Kid
dieland" will be designed for
children 10 and under and will
operate at lower admission pric-
Bank Employes
Overpower Gunman
Coulee City, Wash., Aug. 4 U.
An unidentified gunman, who
attempted to hold up The First
National Bank of Commerce
here, today was in the Columbia
Basin hospital at Ephrata, Wash.,
under armed guard after being
knocked out with a portable
iron safe handle.
Sheriff George Andrus said
the bandit was overpowered by
three employes when he de
manded that the safe be opened
last night.
Entering through a window
while employes were closing the
day's books, he attempted to
force Urban Schmitt, the bank's
manager, to open the safe, An
drus said.
. "This Schm.itt could not do,
because of a time lock." the
sheriff said.
Polio Increases
In Washington
Medical forces rallied their
strength today in the fight
against polio as the crippling
disease made new inroads
throughout Washington state.
An 11-y e a r-old Chewelah
schoolboy, Billy Offerdahl, died
yesterday in a Spokane hospital.
He was the third victim there
since July 1. Seven other per
sons were isolated.
And at Everett the number of
hospitalized cases increased to
10 as doctors diagnosed the ail
ment of 16-month-oid Stephen
Eadie, son of Mrs. I. M. Eadie.
H. L. McMartin, Snohomish
county health officer, said the
situation was "serious but not
approaching an epidemic."
Woodburn Jeweler
Purchases Building
Woodburn E. E, Piper,
Woodburn jeweler, and Mrs
Piper, have purchased the en
tire stock of the Woodburn
Building company. The proper
ty involved is known as the post
office building and the post of
fice and Farmer's Union store
have signified their intention to
remain in the building.
The apartmets above will con
tinue to be called the Wood
burn apartments and some re
modeling will be done to bring
the building up to present day
standards.
