worth, superintendent.
John Maurice Adams will be
the band director to take the
place of Melvin Gilson who has
accepted a position in wewberg.
Adams is a graduate of the Uni
versity of Oregon and the Ore
gon College of Education. Re
cently he has been teaching mu
sic in the Menla school and Col
lege of Menla Park, Calif. He
will also direct vocal music in
the high school.
Mrs. Lucile M. Salisbury will
be high scnoot librarian to suc
ceed Mrs. Ruby F. Ramey who
has signed a contract to teach
science at Oregon College of
Education. Mrs. Salisbury re
ceived her degree in education
and a library certificate from
the Emporia State Teachers' college.
Elton E. Salisbury will suc
ceed Miss Zada Tinker as
teacher of sophomere English
He received his degree from
Oregon State College in June,
Music at the junior high
school will be taught by Mrs.
Margaret Campbell. She has
had several years experience in
Oregon schools and has taught
music in Cottage Grove schools
from 1946 to this year.
John A. Macy will have
charge of boys physical edu
cation work at the junior high
school. He graduated - from
Willamette university in 1947
and taught physical education
for one year at the Hilo inter
mediate school at Hilo, Hawaii.
Macy succeeds John Klapp, who
has taken a position as a Boy
Scout executive.
Judge Alf O. Nelson latt Mon-i
day night, a 16-year-old Salem
youth was arrested by M. R.
Wood, deputy sheriff, on a
charge of "assault and battery.''
The complaint was filed by Pa
tricia McNamara. The charge
specified that the youth gave
his aged and ailing mother a
merciless beating. Judge Nelson
recommended that the boy be
given a mental test

At least that is one conclu
sion which could be taken from
a report dealing with the arrest
of Irven D. Plank Tuesday night
for being too tipsy. . -
The report specified that
Plank's speech was "thick . . .
incoherent . . . hard to under
stand." It also explained that
the subject "seemed mainly con
cerned about what bus company
we were running."
Plank found the answer to
that when he was led to jail,
and later fined $15.

Roden said Alaska has $1,-
300,000 in the bank, but it's
earmarked for certain uses.
Money to pay back the de
sired loan is "in sight between
the middle and end of January,"
Roden explained.

as the trial date of the slot ma
chine cases recently instituted
by the district attorney against
the board of directors of the
Eagles lodge of Salem. The
board members are Emory San

ton, A. C. Burk and A. C. Frie
sen. All the defendants who are
prominent business men prompt
ly entered a plea of "not guilty."
The defendants are released on
their own recognizance.
