Davis Held on Forgery Charge James Franklin Davis, of Dal las, was accused Saturday of forging the name of a Salem po lice officer to an application for the purchase of a .38 caliber pis tol from a local second hand store. The complaint which made the charge was signed by Capt. Wal ter Esplin. The application con taining the alleged forgery was attached to the complaint, and the name of the captqin was found above a dotted line reserv ed for the signature of the chief of police. Heading the list of three ref erences, required by the appli cation, was the name of Dick Carter, Salem used car dealer who is held in county jail under one sentence and to await trial on other charges. Davis was first nabbed by po lice for reckles driving and dis orderly, conduct following the attempted purchase of the gun. Due to a required 24-hour wait ing period, he never received the gun. In a statement to police he had indicated that the reason for buying the gun was to pass it on to his friend, Carter. Po lice also said that a worthless check had been tendered in pay ment for the gun, but no charge was filed on that score. Following the new complaint against Davis for forgery, police indicated that other arrests were to follow, presumably on the same charge.
