Caterpillars in
Sfaylon Area?
Reports that an infestation by
caterpillars may have started in
the Stayton area were being in
vestigated by the county agent's
office Monday afternoon. -
Irvin Carberry, field man for
the Stayton Canning company,
reported to Don Rasmussen of
the county agent's office that
some of the pests had been ob
served at the edge of a bean
field.
This has caused some alarm
because of damaging raids by
the insects in some other parts
of the country, including the
Lebanon district. Rasmussen
said that he isn't greatly wor
ried.
A call came from the Keizer
district Sunday, and two 1
ports from different places came
from the mint fields in the south
part of Marion county.
Caterpillars that,were seen this
summer have appeared in fruit
trees, farm crops and among
thistles and other weeds. They
appear to prefer weeds to other
vegetation.
Most of the insects are said
to be of the type that turns into
butterflies. They can be killed
says Rasmussen, with DDT or
lead arsenate.

Stock Market
Keeps Sluggish
New York, July 11 W The
slock market greeted the presi
dent's mid-year economic mes
sage with polite indifference to
day. Prices moved sluggishly be
fore and after the president
spoke. Few changes exceeded
minor fractions and a wide var
iety of leading issues remained
at Friday's closing levels. Gains
and losses were thoroughly
scrambled.
Business tended to the slow
side. Turnover was at the rate
of only 650,000 shares or so for
the full session.
Most brokers were inclined to
view the president's message
with favor. The opinion was
general, however, that the mes
sage did not offer any new fac
tors to affect trading strategy.
Nickel Plate railroad, often a
volatile issue, dropped 3 points
to 63 at one time.
Higher most of the day were
Republic Steel, United Aircraft,
Schenlcy, American Smelling,
Du Pont, Northern Pacific,
Cheasapeake & Ohio, Standard
Oil (N.J.), Gulf Oil, and Eastern
Air Lines.
Among the balky spots were
Bethlehem Steel, General Mo
tors, Chrysler, U.S. Rubber,
Montgomery Ward, Sears Roe
buck, Caterpillar Tractor.

vive him was abandoned at
10:30 a.m. when the pulse could

lost color.
The pond was 10 feet deep at
the point Witt went under.
