, HISTORIC MEDICAL HIGHLIGHTS No. 41
.SCIENCE VS. DISEASE.
In 1904 Flexner of America used monkey
at guinea pigs to discover a serum for treat
ing cerebro-spinal meningitis. He showed
that the meningococcus microbe gained ac
cess to the bloodstream and the cerebro-spinal
membrances by way of the mucous membrane
of the nose and throat. The disease attacks
all age groups, sometimes in epidemic form.
It is characterized by paralysis of the body
and mortality is high. Treating victims with
an injection of an antimeningitis serum has
greatly reduced fatalities and often prevents
crippling consequences.
