Residents Make Mountain
Out of Molehill in Reality
By LEO TURNER
(United PreM Staff Correspondent)
Molehill, W. Va., July 5 (U.R) This town's 93 residents made
mountain out of a molehill the other day.
They dragged down the sign from in front of the post office
that read Molehill, W. Va., for the last 92 years and nailed
Mountain, W. Va., in Its place. Some 2,000 mountaineers from as
as far as the Ohio river 20 milesf
away trooped over the hills in
their sun bonnets and Sunday
shoes to listen to the oratory
and see the fireworks,
There was a traffic Jam In
front of Haymond's General store
that sent chicxens. cows and
children In all directions.
Molehill's Inst day was the
biggest it had ever seen.
Sherman Ridgewood whipped
his 1923 Model T Ford coupe
with Its red wooden wheels
around a curve in the mountain
road to lead the procession in
to town soon after sunup. It
was a wild two-wheeled ride
around the bends in the new
road that replaced the snake
path through the hills as part of
the benefits Molehill get for
changing its name.
The road was widened, level
ed and the underbrush cut away
for the arrival of Sen. Harley
M. Kilgore, Gov. Okey L. Pat-
teson and Rep. Cleveland M.
Bailey, who came to wish the
town good luck under Its new
name. Incidentally, this county
Is a republican stronghold in a
democratic state..
A sound crew was on hand to
record the ceremony for Colum
bia Broadcasting company's
"County Fair" radio show next
Saturday night.
Most of the town had the
time of Its life. But there were
tears in the eyes of tall, thin,
P7-year-old J. R. Marsh as he
lc.med on his cane and watched
the celebration.
"It's turrible," he said. "Think
cf all the records in there that
will have to be changed. There's
no sense In spending all that
money when you can't change
a thing by just changing Its
name."
The town was named by John
Lantz, the son of the first post
master, Jacob Lantz, In 18S7,
Marsh said.
Molehill was written off the
maps with a burst of oratory, a
carnival, square dancing and a
burst of fireworks that spelled
out "Mountain" with a burst of
rocks on the hillside. The only
aign that was left was the tall
red building at the end of town
that said "Molehill Hammer
Mill."
The whole thing started three
months ago when a couple of
Idea men for the Columbia
Broadcasting company radio
show "County Fair" were
thumbing through the postal
guide and found the name Mole

A similar sudden squall in the
Boston area overturned boats
and caused the drowning of a
month-old baby girl.
The coast guard estimated
that 20 small boats still are
missing in the metropolitan
area. A spokesman said, how
ever, there was no immediate
indication that the death toll
would rise.
