Only the Brave
By PAUL EVAN LEHMAN
(Chapter 20)
Jeff made some coffee, drank
two cups, men decided to makx

dim glow lit one of its back wln

blackness of the alley permitted
torn to perceive it.
He bent over and removed his

and the barrel struck a broom
which had oeen leaning against
the door frame. The broom fell
with a clattei and Jef's aim was
momentarily disturbed.
Instantly the lantern wick was
lowered and the light flickered out.
"Stay where you are!" said Jeff
narpiy, ana startea iorwura.
There wan a flash and a roar
and he felt the slug as it grazed his
cheek. He took two long steps for
ward and dived at the place where
he thought the intruder to be. He

Stunned, all the stars in the
firmament dancing oeiore his eyes,
he fell to the floor. He was not un

was powerless to move. A foot
struck him as the fellow stumbled
over him, but he was too aazed to
try to grab it. Then me burglar

doorway and pounding down the
back steps.
Jeff struggled to his feet and
staggered across the back room to
the door. From behind the alley
came the drum of hoofs which told
of me fellows flight. Jeff s horse
was in Glenn's stable, two full
blocks away. He shook the dizzi
ness off and went back to the
tore. Tearing me paper from the

A man leaped up the back steps,
'came rushing across the back
'room floor and halted abruptly in
the doorway. It was Ed Wade, the
; night deputy, and his cocked gun
jWas pointed at Jeff. He recognized

"Get a shot at him?"
I "No: but he got one at me.
.Missed. He left his calling card

I Wade took the glove and held it

- "S. B. stands for something else,
'too: but in either case it means
'Slug Benjamin." He picked up the
.lantern and started for the back
door. "There's one thing I want to

lEd."
. He led the way to the alley, and
'In a few minutes had found where
the burglar's horse had been tied.
He held the lantern close to the
ground and examined the tracks.
.Then he gave an exclamation of
, satisfaction.
