11 18 Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, Thursday, June 80, 1949i()rte jg May Quit" Senators Under Kevpie Dick' Grins in Victory over Ex-Owners (By Untied Prmi) The "little round man" was wearing a big, wide amile today. "Kewple Dick" Barrett, who has been throwing baseballs for bucks lor more than a quarter century, won hU 218th Pacific Coast league game last night as he beat the Seattle Rainiers. And the win was one of the sweetest of the group lor Barrett. Earlier In the season Seattle, PCL Standings for whom Barrett has turned in 206 wins, decided he was getting too old to pitch at 42 and let him go. Barrett figured he had a few more wins left, so he signed with the Padres. One of those wins was ex hibited last night a 8-2 victory that barely missed being a shut out. And the game dropped the Suds another full length behind the league - leading Hollywood Stars, who pummelled Oakland 14-2. In other loop games the San Francisco Seals beat Los Ange les 6-2 and Portland and Sacra mento split a doubleheader. Portland won the opener 4-2 and Sacramento took the second contest 3-1. Portland won the opening seven-inning game from the Sacs bv rallying for all four runs in the last of the sixth. Sacramento took an early lead on Bill Wilson's home run and a single run in the sixth. Red Lynn got the win and Orval Grove the loss. In the second game Ken Hol- combe stilled the Portland bats with five hits as Sacramento scored early and led all the way. Orteig is the owner of a tavern in the Portland area that has been under lease. The oper ator is having difficulty and Or teig may be compelled to return to protect his interests. In case Orteig has to aban don the diamond, there is a pos sibility that Gene Peterson may be switched from the mound to the outfield. Peterson hits the ball well and has been doing ably at fly chasing during pre game warmups. Although the search for capa ble pitchers is being pursued, Business Manager George Emigh reports no additions to the mound staff are In sight. Luscious Luke Whiffed Breezes in Dallas Mix Dallas The great Luke Easter, first sacker for San Diego In the Pacific Coast baseball league, played in Dallas five years ago, but a local pitcher held him hltless In five times up and whiffed him on three of the trips to the plate. This fact was confirmed this week by Ray Boydston, Dallas sports enthusiast and former manager of the Dallas Townles baseball team. In reading of Easter and watching him In Portland games, Boydston had the feeling that he had met him on the diamond. Checking back over his old scorebooks, he found Easter listed with the Vanport Black Sox, a team that Boydston's Townles bowed to four times In an many meetings. The leading coast batter played on the local high school dia mond against the Townles in a game during the summer of 1944. Neil Richardson, former Dallas high school hurling star, fanned Easter three times and never allowed him to reach first base. Richardson fanned batters down 16 times In the game, but ironically, lost the game by yielding 11 hits. Teamsters Slug Navy Team, 15-0 Combining 13 hits with the opposition's eight miscues, the Teamsters banged out a IS O de cision over Navy Reserve in an Industrial league soflball game Wednesdny night.
