Stocks Advance
To Around Point
New York, June 29 tin A
slow but persistent advance lift
ed stock prices fractions to
around a point today.
The advance followed a short
period of early shakiness when
a number of key issues were
pushed down a bit.
Only a limited amount of
business was done, with turn
over at the rate of about 550,-
000 shares for the full session.
Brokers found at least two en
couraging items in the news in
addition to a good many that
were not so favorable.
First, the senate's approval of
a plan to give the president the
power of plant seizure as well as
injunction to deal with emerg
ency labor disputes attracted
approving comment.
Second, a rally in the London
stock exchange after a recent
severe decline helped market
sentiment.
Among the gainers were U.S.
Steel, Bethlehem Steel, General
Motors,- Chrysler, Studebaker,
Sears Roebuck, United Aircraft,
Westinghouse Electric, Johns
Manville, Standard Oil (N.J.)
Standard Oil of California and
Loew's.
Tending lower were Consol
idated Edison, Northern Pacific
and Warner Bros.
Heavy Frost in
Klamath Area
Klamath Falls, June 29 IIP)
Damaging temperatures cracked
down on the Klamath basins
growing crops last night and
this morning.
Farmers throughout the area
reported one of the worst grow
ing season frosts ot recent years,
with temperatures dropping so
low that both ordinary and ex
traordinary frost-fighting meth
ods proved ineffective.
Potato plants were frozen
back, heading grain was badly
hit, gardens look a heavy beat
ing and even clover and other
stands that usually survive cold
nights showed damage this
morning. While It usually takes
several days to correctly assess
the effects of a frost, it was gen
erally agreed today that dam
age in virtually all areas of the
basin had been substantial.
Coldest spot indicated in this
morning's reports was the home
stead area on Coppock bay
where at least one thtrmome
ter registered 18 degrees. New
ell had 20 degrees, the Tulc
lake experiment station 27, Hen
ley 28, Poe Valley 22, Klamath
Falls 32.
Farmers viewed the situation
with varying shades of opinion
One Coppock bay farmer said
his potatoes were "all through'
but other spud growers said a
fair yield would still be obtain
ed if the area could go through
the remainder of the year with
out another serious crackdown.
