The Salem Senators faced one of the toughest assignments of the Western International league season when they returned Mon day from a tour of Tacoma and Bremerton. They play 12 games during the eight day period beginning with the Spokane Indians at 8 o'clock Monday night. A doubleheader Is slated for Tuesday evening and a single contest Wednesday. The Yakima Bears, making their first appearance of the season, open an eight game stand Thursday night. Double headers will be played Friday, Sunday and the Fourth of July. Bremerton, Wash., June 28 The Bremer to n Bluejackets split Sunday night's two game program with the Salem Senators .as they lost the first, behind the three hit chucking of Ray Mc Nulty and then walloped a trio of Solon pitchers for 18 solid blows as thoy won 17-lj John Marshall lost the first encounter, his fifth defeat of the season as against 14 wins. Keith Simon handcuffed the Senators in the after piece as he limited them to five blows. Bus Sporer, Bill Os born and Jim Foster went to the post for Bill Beard's crew, all with indifferent success. Since the Bluejackets won Saturday night, 8-1 the Senators left for home with no better than an even break in the series. The customarily steady Mc Nulty had control difficulty right from the start as he walked two in the first inning and issued seven bases on balls during the abbreviated contest. However, his mates gave him something solid to work on as they racked up five runs in the second on three hits and two errors. Two hits and an error accounted for two Bluejacket tallies in the fifth. Feature of the nightcap was Mel Wasley's single in the eighth. It was just another single inso far as the game was concerned but for the Salem left fielder it was the blow that broke a drought of more than 30 times at bat without a base knock. Sporer lasted one and a third Innings before giving way to Os born. Foster pitched the 7th and 8th. Seven runs in the second de cided the issue as Catcher Len Neal opened and closed the chap ter for the Tars who got but three hits during the frame. Four bases on balls and Bill Taylor's triple with the sacks full con tributely greatly to the slaughter. Official Box First name: Halem (6) B. Crew Defeat Hits Washington Hard Poughkeepsie, N. Y., June 27 (U.R) The most disappointed man in crew racing today was Alvin Ulbrickson, veteran coach of the Washington Huskies, who was bent on revenge in the Poughkeepsie regatta last Satur day but found only bitter de feat instead. For Ulbrickson, who watched Ky Ebright's California Bears sweep to a length victory over his Huskies, it was a double de feat. Ulbrickson, five-time win ner of the regatta, wanted this one most of all. His reason went back to May when California beat Washing ton in a duel meet on the west coast. In that race, the Huskies led most of the way until their number seven man caught a crab. California moved ahead to win and Ulbrickson thought the Bears' triumph was a freak." California's victory Saturday, however, proved the Bears had the power to win. Bevos Take Twin Win, Other PC Teams Split (By the Associated PrMS) Split doubleheaders were the Sabbath menu throughout the Pacific Coast league. That is except for San Francisco, which had a twin-beating served up by Portland to give the Beavers an unquestionable hold on sixth place in the standings, Salem Legion Wins Mound Duel from Wood burn, 7-0 One of the tightest games of the American Legion season re sulted in a 1 to 0 decision over Woodburn by Salem Sunday afternoon at Waters park. Sonny Walker, winning chucker, and D. Hall, who was charged with the loss, engaged in a pitching duel with each one giving up but three hits. Woodburn com mitted two' errors and Salem one. Walker had sharp control as he walked but four and struck out 11. But one Woodburn player got as far as third base, Hall walked four and struck out one. He had control of the situation except in the third when Walker scored on Jones' double after he had reached first on. an error and then ad vanced on Stewart's sacrifice. The win was the 10th straight for Coach Bill Hanauska's crew which won the first half of the season without a loss. . Catcher Henderson got two of Woodburn's three hits, with Nelson getting the other. Walk er, Jones and Johnson hit for Salem. This was the margin of a 6 to 3 win for the Padres over the loop-leading Hollywood Stars in the second game of the day. In the opener Hollywood s Gordon Maltzberger kept San Diego well in check and the Stars turned in a well-done 12 to victory. Herb Gorman and Irv Noren batted in five runs apiece for Hollywood as the Stars won the lopsided affair. Booker T. The Rainiers captur ed the nightcap 6 to 3 but Los Angeles, in the league cellar, won the series lour games to three. Despite his triumph, Mc Daniels lacked speed and con trol, yielding 11 hits and five walks before he was yanked in the eighth. But he showed shrewdness in the clutches and received good support. Oakland won a seven-inning opener 8 to 1 and oacramento took the regulation nightcap 2 to 0. The second game win was Frankie Dasso's 12th victory of the year against four losses. Oakland ran away with the first game, cinching it with a six-run splurge in the first inning off Manny Salvo. The big punch was furnished by Frank Kerr with a homer, his first of the season. Dodger Sluggers Worry Pitchers With Record New York, June 27 U.B Agonizing is the new a pitcher geti these days when his manager says "tomorrow you start against the Brooklyn Dodgers." During the month of June only two hurlers, Tiny Bonham o Pittsburgh and Johnny Schmitz of the Cubs, have started and finished winning assignments against the league leaders. And from May 22 until June 19 the Dodgers went 26 straight games without having a pitcher go all the way and win against them. It has happened only 13 times in 64 games this season, four times in April and seven in May before the Brooks got warmed up and only twice since then. The only pitcher to do it twice, is Schmitz, their old hex man. In the 33 games since Ken Raf fensberger of Cincinnati pitched a masterpiece one-hitter against them on May 22, 87 pitchers have been used or an average of 2.63 per game. Yesterday in another terrify ing display of power the Brooks made 22 hits in a 15 to 3 crush ing of the Pirates at Pittsburgh, which followed their 17 to 10 triumph of the previous day. Four pitchers were cannonaded in each game. The determined Cardinals hung on a half game behind the Dodgers with a 2 to 0 four-hit victory by George Munger over the Braves at St Louis in which he hit his first big league homer. The Reds retarded the speed ing Phillies with a sweep at Cin cinnati, 4 to 3 in 10 innings, and 5 to 2. The Giants, playing without Manager Leo Durocher, who was starting a five-day supension scored a 6 to 2 victory over the Cubs, whose boss, Frankie Frisch was back after serving a simi lar pennance period for arguing. Pat Mullin, up from a dead spot on the bench, smashed three homers and a single to lead the Tigers to a 12 to 4 rout of the pace-setting Yankees at New York after Detroit dropped the opener, 6 to 2 Sieve Gromek won his first game since May 29 for the re vived Indians, a 10-inning five hitter in which a single by Ken Keltner and a double by Bob Kennedy supplied the winning 3 to 1 margin at Washington.
