Landmark Removed as Fire
Destroys Perrydale Store
By BEN MAXWELL
Fire that destroyed Yocum's store at Perrydale early Sunday
removed a distinguished Polk county landmark erected 70 years
ago when this community was on the route of a narrow gauge
railroad then under construction to develop Yamhill and Polk
counties.
Perrydale was named by Wil-
nam i-crry, pioneer properly. rlv, , .....
owner In the community, to
honor himself. A post office was
established there about 1870.
The hamlet did not boom, how-
ever, until It became apparent
that a narrow gauge railroad
(the ' Dayton, Sheridan and
Grand Ronde, projected by
Joseph Gaston) would tap the
region.
On August 1, 1878, the town
was laid out by I. W. McGrew
and not long thereafter the nar
row gauge train from Dayton
arrived about 8 p. m. and cars
from Dallas at 5:30 a, m
Oregon State Business direc
tory for 1881 mentions that Mc
Grew & Johnson operated the
general store (presumably In the
building burned over the week
end). J. T. McCarty kept a meat
market, Alexander Townsend
was village druggist and Dr. J.
W. Wilson was physician and
surgeon. Dr. Wilson also kept
the Eureka hotel and, says the
directory, "gave his guests good
eating and easy sleeping at rea
sonable rates." He waa also Jus
tice of the peace.
Dr. Wilson's competitor In the
hotel business was Mrs. Mary
Wells who kept the Reno house.
Besides these businesses Enes
Richard served as wagon maker
and Henry C. Gentry, who kept
the saloon, served drinks. Jacob
Turner mended boots and shoes
nd George Walling stocked
stoves, tin and sheet iron ware.
Local culture waa fostered in
a one room schoolhouse with an
average attendance of 30 pupils
during nine months of the year.
Regular meetings were conduct
ed in the Methodist church twice
during each month. In 1881 A.
Patterson was Perrydale postmaster.
