Power Line Extended Pro
viding additional energy for
farm operations during the irri
gation season is the proposal of
the construction of a new 66,-000-volt
transmission line, sub
station and distribution lines in
the Talbot district by the Mt.
States power company. The
cost is estimated at $62,000 with
the project expected to be com
pleted by July. The supply will
be distributed from a central lo
cation near Talbot.
Lions Hear Ohling Merrill
D. Ohling, Salem, district gov
ernor for Lions International,
visited the Dayton Lions club
this week. The club named
Carl Francis chairman of a
committee to select the Day
ton entry in the contest for
"Miss McMinnville," with the
winner to compete for the title
of Miss Oregon. Other mem
bers of the committee are
Adolph Hiraba and Ernest Bei
chel, Jr. Members of the nom
inating committee named by
Harold Lewis, president, are

Ellis, Earle Coburn, Harvey

thaler. Returns to Bethel Mrs. Anna
Matten, who has been in Cali
fornia since last December, has
returned to Bethel and is at the
home of her son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James
Lauderback. She was accom
panied north by another daugh
ter, Mrs. Forrest Rycraft, Wat
sonville, with whom she spent
the winter. Mrs. Rycraft has
returned home after a short visit
here and with a sister, Mrs. M.
J. Crabtree at McMinnville.
Tour Postponed Postponed
from today until Friday of next
week was the tour of the KXL
Flyign Squadron from Portland.
The delay was because of the
inability of Commander Scott,
with the squadron as speaker, to
make the trip this week. The
tour is in conjunction with the
Oregon Ad club. While the
group is in Salem Commander
Scott will speak at the luncheon
of the Salem Realty board.
Butter Drops Cent Butter
and butterfat prices were quoted
a cent lower here Friday. Buy
ing prices on butterfat brought
it down to 63 cents on premium;
61 cents on No. 1 and S5-S9
cents on No. 2. Butter prices are
listed now at 66 cents, whole
sale, 71 cents retail. Grade A
eggs were listed a cent higher as
were mediums by some produce
firms, although the extra large
AA and the large AA grades re
mained unchanged Friday,

Salem police Thursday that her

watch. The incident apparently
occurred in a Salem school.

Ask for Dredge The county
court Friday decided to ask Col.
Walsh of the government engi
neers at Portland to give per
mission for a government dredge
now anchored in the vicinitv
of Wheatland ferry to dredge out
the bar which is threatening to
put the ferry out of operation on
the Yamhill side of the river
Water there is now reported to
give only about 18 inches lee
way to the ferry and a drop in
the river will cause it to tie up.
Stage Line Purchased Pacif
ic Trailways has been granted
approval by the interstate com
merce commission to purchase
the Santiam stage line operating
between Albany and Bend, the
transfer effective May 16. Trail
ways was also granted permis
sion to operate during the win
ter on a temporary certificate.
Wash Hurts Road County
Commissioner Roy Rice stated
Friday that high water which
went over the pavement on mar
ket road 37, the Buena Vista
ferry-Talbot road, had cut away
the shoulder right up to the
pavement for about 100 feet
not far from the Turnidge place
A county crew has thrown up
a barricade to protect traffic
which can still go through and
repairs will be made as soon
as feasible. This is the second
wash in the locality this year
on the same road.

Industrial Supervisors club will
hold a dinner meeting at the

Dr. Merrix Here Sunday
Rev. ' A. Ronald Merrix, field
officer of the National Council
of the Episcopal church, with
headquarters in San Francisco,
will deliver the sermon at 11
a. m. Sunday at St. Paul's
church here. Rev. Dr. Merrix is
well known throughout the
northwest. He was rector of St
Paul's church in Oakland, Cel.,
from 1932 to 1934. He is stop
ping here after attending the
Provincial Synod in Seattle this
week.

The appointment of Dr. Cam
eron Saint John Paulin as asso
ciate professor and head of the
art department of Willamette
university has been announced
by President G. Herbert Smith
He will begin his duties at the
opening of the fall term in Sep
tember. Cameron was an Instructor in
ceramics and design at Ontario
college in Toronto, and for the
past four years has been an as
sistant professor of art at Ohio
State Teachers college.
Cameron received a bachelor
of fine arts degree from Alfred
university of New York with
a major in design and minor in
ceramics. On a graduate schol
arship at the University of Chi
cago he v.-.-rked for and receiv
ed a PhD degree in art history
He also served as assistant cur
ator of the Epstein collection of
art in Chicago.
Evangelist Wood
To Preach Twice
Rev. Paul Wood, outstanding
fivangelist and musician will
oring the morning and evening
messages on Sunday, May 8, at
ftie First Evangelical United
Brethren church, Marion and
Summer, concluding a week-end
of evangelism. Rev. Wood is an
accomplished pianist; he also
plays the trumpet, the musical
saw, ai.d sings. This spring he
has been teaching at the Western
School of Evangelical Religion at
Jennings Lodge, in the field of
Christian Education.
Also to be featured in the
morning worship service at 17
o'clock will be the dedication of
infants in baptism, and the re
ception of members into the
church.

giant ants. Police said the un
ique torture may have been de
vised by disgruntled relatives of

Memorial Day
Plans Meetina
Memorial day plans will be
discussed at a meeting of the!
Federated Patriotic anrietiea at
the Chamber of Commerce Tues
day night.
Each member organization Is
requested to have at least two
representatives present to help
in making plans for the usual
parade, GAR, Legion circle and
navy memorial exercises at the
Center street bridge.
All patriotic organizations are
asked to have their representa
tives present regardless of whe
ther they are affiliated with the
federation, according to Don Ma-

Plans for Memorial day so far
include an outstanding speaker,
vet to be announced, who will
speak from the courthouse steps
after wreaths have been placed
at the foot of the memorial on
the courthouse lawn.
The society has accepted an
invitation from the First Presby
terian church to attend Memorial
Sunday services. All FPC mem
ber organizations are asked to
attend, taking their colors with
them.
