East Salem Residents Are
Honored by Many Friends
East Salem, May 9 Mr. and Mrs. Ted Kuenzl who have lived
In Middle Grove community lor several years and recently moved
to North Howell district were honored by members of the Boy
Scout committeemen and their families with a house warming.
A covered dish dinner was provided by the guests and gilts ol a
camelia and azaleas were pre-
ented them lor their new home.

C. W. O. Grant Wicklander
and wile have been visiting at
the home of his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Richard T. Wickland
er on Garden road lor the past
10 days. He has been stationed
with the army at Quarry
Heights, Panama, lor the past
three and one-hall years and
now reassigned to Fort Sill.
Oklahoma. They left lor their
new station Tuesday, driving
down the coast to southern California.

William McKinney were host
esses tor the May meeting of
Swegle Woman's club at the
Peffer home on Hollywood drive.
A luncheon was served to Mrs.

The out-standing agriculture
(tudent ol the year who receiv
ed the award of a $25 bond at
the Future Farmers of Ameri
ca program, Donald Bassett, is
a Middle Grove senior who is
assistant Boy Scout leader for
troop 42 and leader of the Dairy
Calf club, in his community.
The May meeting of the As
sociated club of Middle Grove
will be held at the school house
Friday night. This month is
the business meeting night, and
several items of business will
be considered that are ot in
terest to residents of tha community.
Annual Inspection
Friday for Seabees
Salem's organized Seabee
unit, which only last November
was granted organized status
will have its first annual In
spection by a 13th naval district
team at its regular meeting
Friday night. Commander of the
unit is Lt. D. M. Fischer.
Composing the team that will
make the inspection are Lt.
J. B. Urquhart, CEC, USN, and
Lt. C. M. Day, CECR, USNR,
both from the 13th naval dis
trict office in Seattle, and Lt.
Comdr. David Morey, inspector-
instructor lor the naval reserve
in Salem and Eugene and offi
cer in charge ot naval lacilities
in both cities.
During the meeting, Comdr.
Urquhart will tell ol his ex
periences In the Arctic and show
films on that area.
Nazarenes in
District Meet
Mrs. Weaver W. Hess was re
elected, Wednesday, district pre
sident ot the missionary con
vention being held In conjunc
tion with the Oregon District
Assembly of Nazarenes at the
denomination's church, 13th and
Center streets. Members named
to the executive council were
Mrs. Ralph Wynkoop of Port
land, vice president; Mrs. Eu
gene McDowell of Canby, secre
tary; Mrs. Gordon T. Olsen of
Eugene, treasurer; Mrs. L. 1.
Flathers, of Salem, superinten
dent of study and Mrs. O. W.
Jenkins of Salem, district direc
tor of boys and girls work.
Governor D o u g 1 as McKay
greeted the delegates on behalf
of the state while Rev. L. T.
Anderson spoke for the Salem
Ministerial association. Respon
ses were given by Weaver W
Hess, district superintendent
and Dr. Samuel Young, general
superintendent.
Dr. Young, whose headquar
ters are in Boston, Mass., gave
a pre-assembly message on "The
Missionary Challenge of a Post
War Church" in which told ol
experiences gained through a
recent trip to South America

Unionvale Mr. and Mrs.
Clark Noble were hosts at their
home lor a lamily basket dinner 1
for the Nobles. There were 42
members present. Charles Hive-
ly ot Waldport came the larthest
to attend. He was en route home
after visiting his lather, George
Hively, 91 years ot age, at
Washougal, Wash., who is ill at
his home, having suffered a
light stroke a week ago. I

Upon Time Changes
Amity, May 5 An election Is
being arranged by the city
through Friday and Saturday
to determine the popularity or
disapproval of daylight saving
time.
Residents were advised to set
their clocks ahead one hour
Monday and this his resulted In
much confusion and dissatisfac
tion with some on standard time
and others on the daylight time.
Two ballot boxes are being
placed at the City hall and all
citizens are urged to vote for or
against the measure by 9 o'clock
Saturday afternoon.
Akron, Ohio, was so named
because It was believed to be
the highest point of land In the
