    Salem Officers
Are Featured
Salem law officers are given
the big play in the current edi
tion of the Police Journal, offi
cial publication of the Lower
Columbia River Peace unicers
association in a special Salem
edition copies of which are just
being received here.
The front cover carries i
picture of Salem's city mana
ger. J. L. Franzen, shaking
hands in a grip of welcome to
Clyde Warren, Salem's new po
lice chief. Inside the front cov
er is a picture of the entire
force. Tribute is paid to retir
ing Chief Frank Minto in a
special article and an article is
also devoted to some of the
plans for the new chief.
A section is devoted to Sher
iff Denver Young and his staff
with an article on problems
confronting his office with par
ticular reference to the Detroit
dam area. Pictures also are
shown of his criminal staff.
Some pages also are devoted
to the Oregon state police
headquarters in Salem under
command of Capt. R. G. How
ard with a picture of Howard
and Lt. Farley Mogan with an
article also covering Howard's
life as well as Mogan's. Civil
A service in Salem is discussed as
well as other phases related to
law enforcement here.
No player on either club hit

Series.
Albany Construction
Passes Half Million
Albany Estimated value of
construction started here this
year was boosted well past the
half million dollar mark by per
mits for $61,816 in building
during April, it was revealed at
the office of City Engineer Har
old Poling.
Residences predominated con
struction, totaling $54,766, and
in addition permits for residen
tial additions, alterations and re
pairs costing $5,475 were issued,
Non-residential construction to
taled only $1,575.
The April total was somewhat
short of the $393,363 reported
for March, but an even greater
total for May is assured with in
clusion of permits for the two
prospective new grade school
buildings which are inside the
city limits.
Burial Ground
Holds Interest
Macleay One hundred years
ago Elder John Stipp donated
the land for the Stlpp-Macleay
cemetery located about two
blocks from the Macleay Grange
hall. Here are buried many of
the early settlers and their fam
Uies.
Until about seven years ago
the only work done here was
donation. With only this work
the cemetery was becoming a
very unsightly place so a group
of descendants of old settlers or-1
ganized an association for the
upkeep of the cemetery s no
charge can be made for lots.
By donations from 50 cents to
$100 and rummage sales a fund
has been raised, the interest on
which partially keeps down the
grass and brush.
Again this year the women of
the association are planning a
rummage sale to purchase equip
ment. This is one of the oldest cem
eteries in Marion county. Theo
Olson is president and Mrs. Rob
ert Craig, secretary-treasurer of
the association.
