to 7 and Mrs. Thelma E. Miller,
Beting Polk county extension
agent, (home economics), calls
attention to the extent of this
program in Polk county. The
time of the agent is divided be
tween the adult program and
the 4-H work.
There are 14 organized horn,?
extension units which hold
eight regular monthly meetings.
Projects for this year include:
Blouse in a day, textile paint
ing, frozen foods, Christmas
greens, color In the home and
furniture arran g e m e n t , gift
wrapping and footstools.
A statistical summary shows
that 97 meetings were given by
the home agent with an attend
ance totaling 1800; 77 meetings
were given by project leaders
with 1385 total attendance; 738
individual letters were written
in answer to inquiries and 21
circular letters with a total of
3621 copies were mailed. There
were 460 office calls and 401
telephone calls from people ask
ing for information and bulle
tins on homemaking and the
4-H work.
There are 817 enrollments in
4-H projects which include 253
in clothing. 144 in cookery and
222 in health.
Many weeks ago, the navy
put a notice on the bulletin
boards In the press galleries of
the house and senate Inviting
reporters to take week-end
cruises on carriers. The navy
meant men, but it didn't say
so.
May, a correspondent for a
bunch ot papers in Maine, has
a set of sharp eyes behind her
horn-rimmed specs. She was
the first to spot the memo and
say 'aye-aye," which she did
in writing.
The navy didn't reply.
She telephoned the navy. The
navy, not expecting any lady
guests, since none is allowed on
a navy vessel, sputtered and said
it would call back. The navy
didn't. But little May did.
The navy said, golly, it was
sorry, but the carrier Midway
which was to weigh anchor last
Saturday with a flock of con
gressmen and newspapermen,
had no facilities for womei).
