Little Change
In Grain Mart
Chicago, May 4 W" The
grain market weakened today
after starting out with a gusto.
The market climbed for about
the first two hours, and after
that it spent the rest of the ses
sion going down.
The net result of these ac
tions, accompanied by a fair
volume of trade, did not amount
to much in the way of price
changes.
Early buying of wheat was
based on a boost in the bid price
for cash grain by the govern
ment. Other cereals followed
wheat, aided by small cash re
ceipts. Reports of easiness in
cash wheat markets at Kansas
City and Minneapolis caused
some of the late selling.
Wheat closed H-7 lower,
May 32.18-62.18 Vt: corn was H-
1 lower, May $1.32 4 -t,; oats
were 4 lower to 3i higher, May
68 4, rye was unchanged to
lower, May $1.25, soybeans
were Vi-k higher, May $2.27
4-4, and lard was 8 to 13
cents a hundred pounds lower,
May $11.57.

Sharp Gains
New York, May 4 The
stock market advanced fractions
to around 3 points today in the
sharpest advance of the past
month.
A sudden increase in buying
accompanied a distinct slacken-
in tension between Russia

many in general and Berlin in
particular.
Final prices were a shade un
der the day's best gains.
Volume expanded when the
price line curved upward. Turn
over was at the rate of about
1,300,000 shares for the full ses
sion, largest since that number
of shares changed hands on
April 21.
Numerous issues hit new high
prices for 1 949, among them
Richfield Oil, Air Reduction,
Carrier Corp. and Warner Bros
Automobiles followed the
balance of the market forward
while Ford Motor Co. was
threatened with a strike of 60,
000 employes tomorrow at its
huge River Rogue plant. Gains
were posted for General Mo
tors, Chrysler and Studebaker.
Others higher included U.S
Steel, Goodyear, Montgomery
Ward, Woolworth, Douglas Air
craft (up around 3 at one time),
Phelps Dodge, Southern Pacific,
Standard Oil (N.J.), and Twen
tieth Century-Fox.
Corporate bonds tended up
ward with stocks. U.S. govern
ments held steady in over-the-counter
dealings.
