Sacramento Nears Lead

Sacramento pushed across four rum In the last of the ninth to
natch a 4-8 win from Seattle and also to push themselves to
within a half-game of the league leading San Diego Padres.
The solons are tied for second
with Hollywood which lost to
Oakland, 3-2. San Diego, al
though beaten 4-3 by Portland,
still managed to keep Its sltm
lead.
In the other Wednesday night
game, San Francisco Walloped
Los Angelea early and often to
win 11-2. I
The Beavers took the lead In
the first inning at San Diego
and lasted. Johnny Barrett's
two-run homer in the fifth
widened the lead to 4-1. Dain
Clay's double, Steve Mesner's
aingle and a long fly gave San
Diego Its final two runs in the
seventh. Attendance was 5,795.

Jim Dimlt, Leslie Junior high faculty member and former
physical director of the YMCA, was named director for the
Salem Softball association during Wednesday night's conference
of team managers and Vera Gil-'
more, school - city recreation
head. Dimit replaces Gumee
Flesher who served in a similar
capacity for years but who ask
ed to be relieved this season.
Play in the city league will
start the night of May 23 under
the light of Leslie field with
eight teams competing. The
sobedule calls for two games
each Monday, Tuesday, Thurs
day and Friday night with no
admission charge.
The association expects to
close out the season by August
14. Teams competing include
